New Year’s Day entered the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (USA-G1) as a maiden winner and left it as a potential champion, scoring by 1¼ lengths at 10-1 odds. His potential was derailed by a chipped sesamoid, which sent him into retirement in December 2013 without having raced again. Upstaged by undefeated CashCall Futurity Stakes (USA-G1) winner Shared Belief (who won his three races by a combined 19½ lengths) in Eclipse Award voting, New Year’s Day was not particularly well supported at stud given his status as a Breeders’ Cup winner and, after five Northern Hemisphere seasons in Kentucky, was exported to Brazil. He was later resold by his Brazilian owner for export to Japan.
Race record
3 starts, 2 wins, 0 seconds, 1 third, US$1,154,000
2013:
Honors
Eclipse Award finalist, American champion 2-year-old male (2013)
Assessments
Highweighted at 126 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American 2-year-old males of 2013, 1 pound above the official divisional champion, Shared Belief.
As an individual
A bay horse, New Year’s Day has a well-sloped shoulder and an attractive, muscular body but is upright on his pasterns and has his hocks out behind him. He lacked tactical speed and came from well off the pace in his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile win. He was a winner over a synthetic surface in his maiden victory. He was retired after a non-displaced chip was discovered in his left hind sesamoid.
As a stallion
As of August 13, 2024, New Year’s Day has sired nine stakes winners.
Notable progeny
Fighting Mad (USA), Maximum Security (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, New Year’s Day was bred by Clearsky Farms. A US$425,000 purchase from the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale, he was owned by Gary and Mary West and was trained by Bob Baffert. He was ridden to his win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile by Martin Garcia. New Year’s Day entered stud in 2014 in Kentucky at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm. In 2018, he moved to Luis Felipe Brandão dos Santos’s Haras Eternamente Rio in Brazil. He was sold to Shadai Stallion Station, Japan, for a reported US$5 million in May 2019.
