As an individual
A well-balanced dark bay or brown mare with an excellent shoulder and a deep girth, Toussaud was known for being “amazingly stubborn” and for a quirky disposition, which she tended to pass on to her foals. She was afflicted with chronic laminitis from 1995 onward and became too medically fragile to rear her own foals, which were placed on nurse mares following their births. In spite of her health issues, she remained sociable and friendly toward her caregivers.
As a producer
Designated as a Reine-de-Course by pedigree analyst Ellen Parker, Toussaud produced 10 named foals, of which seven started and six won. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Toussaud was bred and owned by Juddmonte Farms. In the United States, she was trained by Robert “Bobby” Frankel. She was pensioned from broodmare duty in December 2007 due to laminitis. She was euthanized on January 5, 2009, due to declining health.
Pedigree notes
Toussaud’s pedigree is outcrossed through five generations. She is a full sister to 1993 Vineland Handicap (USA-G3) winner Navarra, whose son Indygo Shiner (by A.P. Indy) won the 2001 Jefferson Cup Stakes (USA-G3) and had some success as a sire in Argentina. Navarra is also the third dam of 2012 Puerto Rican champion imported 2-year-old male Dixie Indy. Returning to Toussaud, she is also a half sister to Canadian listed stakes winner Image of Class (by Codex).
Toussaud and her siblings are out of 1980 Milady Handicap (USA-G2) winner Image of Reality, whose half sister Joan’s Little Gem (by Kinsman Star) is the dam of Grade 2-placed stakes winner Sky Command (by Relaunch). Image of Reality, in turn, is out of Edee’s Image (by Cornish Prince), a winning half sister to 1969 Sanford Stakes winner Walker’s (by Jaipur).
The next dam in Toussaud’s tail-female line is unraced Ortalan (by Swaps), whose full sister Naphalia is the dam of multiple stakes winner Chelauren (by Sham) and the second dam of Grade 2 winner Hard Gem. Produced from Bravura (by 1941 Italian champion 3-year-old male Niccolo dell’Arca), Ortalan is also a half sister to 1976 Gulfstream Park Handicap (USA-G1) winner Hail the Pirates (by Hail to Reason) and to 1964 Spinaway Stakes and Matron Stakes winner Candalita (by Olympia), dam of multiple stakes winner Olympic Circuit (by Banquet Circuit) and second dam of Grade 3 winners Apple Current and Blossoming Beauty (both by Little Current). In addition, Ortalan is a half sister to Lizanne Dear (by Bold Ruler), second dam of Grade 3 winner Master Dad, and to Lizabeth (by Graustark), second dam of 1984 Young America Stakes (USA-G1) winner Script Ohio and multiple Grade 3 winner Young Daniel.

Fun facts
- Toussaud was the second mare from Juddmonte’s broodmare band to earn the title of Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. The first was Slightly Dangerous, who earned her honors in 1997.
- Because she was unable to rear her own foals, Toussaud was given a goat named Liz to keep her company.
