A Glitter (USA)

February 6, 1955 – c. 1981

Khaled (GB) x A Gleam (USA), by Blenheim II (USA)

Family 23-b

Second only to Idun among the sophomore fillies of 1958, A Glitter compiled an honorable record during an arduous campaign that year, winning seven of 17 starts. Unfortunately, she was not as successful afterward, either as a racer or as a broodmare, though she had her moments in both areas.

Race record

39 starts, 13 wins, 3 seconds, 7 thirds, $196,370

1957:
  • 3rd Selima Stakes (USA, 8.5FD, Laurel)

1958:
  • Won Monmouth Oaks (USA, 9FD, Monmouth)
  • Won Betsy Ross Stakes (USA, 6FD, Garden State)
  • Won Coaching Club American Oaks (USA, 11FD, Belmont)
  • 2nd Beldame Handicap (USA, 9FD, Belmont)
  • 3rd Vineland Handicap (USA, 8.5FD, Garden State)

1959:
  • Won Modesty Handicap (USA, 6FD, Balmoral)
  • 2nd Bed o' Roses Handicap (USA, 8.5FD, Jamaica)
  • 3rd Vineland Handicap (USA, 9FD, Garden State)
  • 3rd Black Helen Handicap (USA, 9FD, Hialeah)
  • 3rd Gallorette Stakes (USA, 9FD, Pimlico)

Assessments

Rated at 114 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1957, 6 pounds below champion juvenile filly Idun.

Rated at 122 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American filles and mares 3 and up of 1958, 1 pound below divisional champion Idun.

Rated at 115 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American older females of 1959, 15 pounds below champion Tempted.

As an individual

A big, growthy brown filly who was rather backward in her development, A Glitter was rugged, strong and durable but was possessed of an ungenerous temperament and did not always show her full ability.

As a producer

A Glitter produced 14 named foals, of which nine started and seven won. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Diamond Daisy (1968, by Nashua) is the dam of multiple stakes winner Galaxy Road (by Kennedy Road) and the second dam of Grade 3 winner Thesunshinesbright.
  • Bansha (1978, by Accipiter) is the dam of 1992 Hawthorne Derby (USA-G3) winner Bantan (by Tanthem).

Connections

Foaled in California, A Glitter was bred and owned by Calumet Farm. She was trained by Horace “Jimmy” Jones.

Pedigree notes

A Glitter is inbred 5x5 to 1896 Oaks Stakes winner Canterbury Pilgrim. She is a half sister to multiple Grade 2 winner Gleaming (by Herbager) and to Moonbeam (by Tim Tam), dam of 1981 American champion 2-year-old filly Before Dawn (by Raise a Cup) and third dam of 1998 Golden Slipper Stakes (AUS-G1) winner Prowl and Australian Group 2 winner I Rock My World. A Glitter is also a half sister to Cabaret (by Tom Fool), third dam of Grade 2 winner Terra Incognita.

A Glitter and her siblings were produced from A Gleam, who was the second-rated American 3-year-old filly of 1952 behind her stablemate Real Delight. A half sister to two-time Widener Handicap winner Bardstown (by Alibhai), to stakes winner Coiner (by Whirlaway), and to Diamond Tear (by Count Fleet; dam of the good sprint stakes mare Sun Glint, by Sun Again, and second dam of the good 3-year-old sprinter Sunny Tim), A Gleam is out of Twilight Tear (by Bull Lea), the 1944 American Horse of the Year.

Fun facts
  • A Glitter is one of a record six Coaching Club American Oaks winners bred and owned by Calumet Farm; the others were Twilight Tear (1944), Wistful (1949), Real Delight (1952), Our Mims (1977) and Davona Dale (1979). All but A Glitter also earned honors as American champion 3-year-old filly.
