Action This Day was a top racehorse only once in his lifetime, but his timing could not have been better. After breaking his maiden by a nose in a Santa Anita maiden special weight over 8½ furlongs, he came back over the same track and distance and scored his one big victory in the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (USA-G1) in his next outing. That proved to be enough to secure him an American juvenile championship in a weak year for the division. He did not win again and was not a success at stud.
Race record
9 starts, 2 wins, 1 second, 0 thirds, US$822,484
2003:
Honors
Eclipse Award, American champion 2-year-old male (2003)
Assessments
Co-highweighted at 126 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile males of 2003, tied with Cuvee and Ruler's Court.
As an individual
A bay horse, Action This Day was somewhat long-backed and rather light behind. He typically came from far off the pace and benefited from a pace meltdown in his Breeders’ Cup win. According to trainer Richard Mandella, the colt hurt his back when running sixth in the 2004 Kentucky Derby (USA-G1) and probably was not given enough time to make a full recovery.
As a stallion
According to Jockey Club records, Action This Day sired 170 winners and five stakes winners from 331 named foals of racing age. His best runner was 2011 Peruvian champion imported older female Cracovia.
Notable progeny
Cracovia (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Action This Day was bred by Jaime S. Carrion, Trustee. A US$150,000 yearling from the 2002 Keeneland July sale, he was owned by B. Wayne Hughes, who bought Spendthrift Farm the year after Action This Day’s championship season. The colt was trained by Richard Mandella and was ridden to his win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile by David Flores. Action This Day entered stud in 2005 in Kentucky at Castleton Lyons. He moved from there to Spendthrift Farm in 2008 and to Dana Point Farm, Pennsylvania, in 2010; his next stop was Indiana Stallion Station, where he stood in 2011-2013. Following the 2013 Northern Hemisphere breeding season, Action This Day was exported to Peru to stand at Haras Los Azahares. His current status is unknown, but his last known foals appear to have been registered in Peru in 2017.

Fun facts:
- “Action This Day” was a favorite phrase of Sir Winston Churchill, who as the Prime Minister of England in 1940-1945 led his country through World War II. (He later served a second term as Prime Minister in peacetime, 1951-1955.) The phrase was stamped in red on many of Churchill’s memoranda and documents, signaling a need for immediate resolution of whatever issue was being addressed.
- Action This Day's victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile was part of a record-breaking day for trainer Richard Mandella, who also won the Juvenile Fillies with Halfbridled, the Turf with Johar (in a dead heat with High Chaparral), and the Classic with Pleasantly Perfect.
