Alywow (CAN)

February 7, 1991 – March 2, 2002

Alysheba (USA) x Triple Wow (CAN), by Coastal (USA)

Family 7
Arguably the best North American runner sired by 1988 American Horse of the Year Alysheba, Alywow won stakes races in both Canada and the United States but ran her best race when second in the 1994 Rothmans Ltd. International Stakes (CAN-G1). Pitted against a fine international field and dismissed at 18-1, Alywow drove home tenaciously and missed catching the 4-year-old colt Raintrap, winner of the 1993 Prix Royal-Oak (French St. Leger, FR-G1) by a length as he set a new course record. Her courageous effort earned her three Sovereign Awards, including honors as the Canadian Horse of the Year. Following an injury, she was not quite the same at 4 but became a good broodmare in a short producing career.

Race record

19 starts, 7 wins, 6 seconds, 3 thirds, US$648,431 (includes converted Canadian earnings)

Assessments

Rated at 122 pounds on the Canadian Free Handicap for juvenile fillies of 1993, 2 pounds below champion Term Limits but second overall.

Rated at 116 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American turf females of 1994, 8 pounds below champion Flawlessly.

As an individual

A bay mare bearing a distinct resemblance to her sire, Alywow preferred closing from off the pace. She suffered a hairline fracture to a hind leg while running fourth in the 1994 Matriarch Stakes (USA-G1).

As a producer

Alywow produced four named foals of racing age; three started and won. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Hidden Cat (1997, by Storm Cat) won the 2001 Twixtslusive Handicap (USA-L). She is the dam of multiple listed stakes winner Global Power (by Pulpit) and juvenile stakes winner Pegasusbystorm (by Fusaichi Pegasus).
  • Suitably Discreet (1998, by Mr. Prospector) never raced but is the dam of 2014 Monmouth Stakes (USA-G2) winner Speaking of Which (by Invincible Spirit).
  • Century City (1999, by Danzig) won the 2002 Goffs International Stakes (IRE-G2) and the 2003 Arcadia Handicap (USA-G2). He stood in Kentucky and Australia but was a dismal failure as a sire, failing to get a single stakes winner.

Connections

Foaled in Ontario, Canada, Alywow was bred and owned by David S. Willmot's Kinghaven Farms. She was trained by Roger Attfield. After producing a 1997 Storm Cat filly (later named Hidden Cat) for Skara Glen Stables, Alywow was sold to Curragh Bloodstock for $1.25 million through the 1997 Keeneland November mixed sale, in foal to Mr. Prospector; she was owned afterward by Pat O'Kelly, owner of Kilcarn Stud in Ireland. Injured in a paddock accident in the fall of 2001, she was euthanized March 2, 2002, due to complications of a long-term bone infection.

Pedigree notes

Alywow is inbred 3x4 to 1963 American co-champion 2-year-old male Raise a Native. She is a half sister to Double Wow (by With Approval), dam of 2008 Next Move Handicap (USA-G3) winner Wow Me Free (by Menifee) and stakes winner La Perouse (by El Prado) and second dam of 2012 Premio Parioli (Italian Two Thousand Guineas, ITY-G3) winner Malossol. Alywow is also a half sister to Triplex (by Sunday Silence), dam of 2020 Epsom Cup (JPN-G3) winner Daiwa Cagney (by King Kamehameha).

Alywow was produced from 1988 Next Move Handicap (USA-G3) winner Triple Wow, a half sister to 1995 Ormonde Stakes (ENG-G3) winner Zilzal Zamaan (by Zilzal). Triple Wow is also a half sister to stakes-placed Star Reputation (by Star Spangled), dam of multiple listed stakes winner Dark Hours (by Dynaformer), second dam of Canadian Grade 3 winner Hour of Justice, and third dam of Japanese Group 3 winner Levante Lion and Grade 3 winner Tightend Touchdown.

Triple Wow and her siblings are out of unraced Iva Reputation (by Sir Ivor). Produced from Reputation (by the stakes-winning Khaled horse Hillary), Iva Reputation is a half sister to Good Reputation (by Gran Zar), dam of stakes winner Storm Alarm (by Storm Boot). The female line races back to a high-class Argentine family originating with the English import Devoniensis, a 1900 daughter of 1888 Two Thousand Guineas and Derby Stakes winner Ayrshire.

Fun facts
  • Alywow won the first race staged over Woodbine’s new E. P. Taylor turf course in 1994, taking the Canadian Breeders’ Cup Handicap. While her time was a new course record by default, she still went the distance in a sharp 1:39-4/5.
  • Alywow produced back-to-back sales-topping yearlings at the Goffs Orby sale. Her 1998 filly by Mr. Prospector went for $1.6 million in 1999, and in 2000 her yearling Danzig colt went for $2.2 million.
  • Alywow is the namesake for a turf stakes at Woodbine.
