Kris S. (USA) x Aurora (USA), by Danzig (USA)
American Family 4
Like his sire Kris S., Arch did not have a long racing career, but he showed substantial ability. As a sire, he lived up to his beautiful pedigree, proving one of the more reliable sources of stamina in the American stallion market of the early 21st century. He got a successor at Claiborne Farm in his champion son Blame and is also the maternal grandsire of 2010 American champion 2-year-old male and successful sire Uncle Mo.
Race record
7 starts, 5 wins, 1 second, 0 thirds, US$480,969
1998:
As an individual
A dark bay or brown horse, Arch was lengthy with plenty of substance but was somewhat shorter-legged in relation to his height than his sire. He had a good shoulder, short cannons and extremely powerful hindquarters with strong muscling extending well into the gaskins. Like most members of his male line, Arch was more rugged than show-horse handsome.
As a stallion
Statistics compiled by The Jockey Club credit Arch with 665 winners (59.0%) and 70 stakes winners (6.2%) from 1128 named foals. While Arch sired top sprinters, most of his progeny were better over routes, and most needed time to mature.
Notable progeny
Archarcharch (USA), Arklow (USA), Arrivale (USA), Blame (USA), Grand Arch (USA), Hymn Book (USA), Instilled Regard (USA), It Tiz Well (USA), Les Arcs (USA), Love Theway Youare (USA), Overarching (USA), Pine Island (USA), Pomology (USA), Preservationist (USA), Prince Arch (USA)
Notable progeny of daughters
Babouche (GB), I'll Have Another (USA), Lines of Battle (USA), Uncaptured (CAN), Uncle Mo (USA), War Flag (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Arch was bred by Helen Alexander and Helen Groves, who sold him for US$710,000 at the 1996 Keeneland July yearling sale. He raced for the partnership of Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider. He was trained by Frank Brothers. He stood at Claiborne throughout his stud career, dying of an apparent heart attack on January 20, 2016, and was buried at Claiborne.
Pedigree notes
Arch is inbred 5x5 to Nasrullah and to Native Dancer. He is a full brother to listed stakes winner Alisios and a half brother to Festival of Light (by A.P. Indy), who was named Horse of the Year in the United Arab Emirates in 2001. Arch is also a half brother to 2010 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (USA-G1) winner Acoma (by Empire Maker); to Antics (by Unbridled), dam of Japanese Group 2 winner Albiano (by Harlan's Holiday) and 2019 American champion female sprinter Covfefe (by Into Mischief); to Asian Empress (by Empire Maker), dam of listed stakes winner Tea Time (by Pulpit); to Aztec Pearl (by A.P. Indy), dam of 2019 Fred W. Hooper Stakes (USA-G3) winner Aztec Sense (by Street Sense); and to Arania (by Dynaformer), dam of 2019 Tokyo City Cup Stakes (USA-G3) winner Campaign (by Curlin).
Arch's dam Aurora was a Grade 3-placed listed stakes winner in her own right and is a full sister to 1994 Japanese champion 2-year-old filly Yaminin Paradise, dam of Japanese stakes winner Yamanin Seraphim (by Sunday Silence). Aurora is also a half sister to Grade 3 winner Destiny Dance (by Nijinsky II), dam of 2004 Frizette Stakes (USA-G1) winner Balletto (by Timber Country; dam of Group 3 winner Frost Point, by Frosted, and listed stakes winner Villanesca, by Distorted Humor) and Irish Group 3 winner Dearly (by Rahy; dam of listed stakes winner True Cause, by Storm Cat).
Aurora is out of Althea (by Alydar), one of eight stakes winners produced by 1983 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee (by Never Bend). The American champion 2-year-old filly of 1983, Althea is a full sister to Grade 2 winners Aishah and Aquilegia, both notable producers in their own rights.
