​A stakes-winning younger half sister of the fine race mare and producer Kittiwake, Beaconaire was less talented as a runner but came close to matching her sister’s record as a producer. All three of her stakes-winning daughters bred on, and two of her lesser racing daughters also made significant contributions.

Beaconaire produced 14 named foals, of which 11 started and eight won. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Sabin (1980, by Lyphard) won 11 graded stakes races including the 1984 Gamely Handicap (USA-G1) and Yellow Ribbon Stakes (USA-G1). She is the dam of Grade 3-placed restricted stakes winner Sabina (by Cox’s Ridge) and listed stakes winner Al Sabin (by Alydar) and is the second dam of Grade 3 winner Luftikus. She is also the third dam of 2012 Vanity Handicap (USA-G1) winner Love Theway Youare; Grade 2 winners Mr Freeze, Saint Anddan, Street Sounds, and Tower of Texas; and Grade/Group 3 winners Dilemma and Heavenly Ransom. Sabin’s more distant descendants include 2020 Canadian champion 2-year-old male Gretzky the Great, 2019 Frizette Stakes (USA-G1) winner Wicked Whisper, Grade 2 winners First Peace and Point of Honor, and Grade/Group 3 winners Lightning Moon, Maltese Falcon, Overture, Summer in Saratoga, and Tip Top Thomas.
  • Fatah Flare (1982, by Alydar) won the 1985 Musidora Stakes (ENG-G3). She is the fourth dam of 2024 Panamanian champion 3-year-old male Dancer War and of Australian Group 2 winner Rubisaki.
  • Lady of the Light (1985, by The Minstrel) produced two-time American champion steeplechaser Flat Top (by Alleged) and multiple Grade 3 winner Asema (by Theatrical). She is the second dam of Grade 3 winner Where’s Sterling and the third dam of two-time Saudi Arabian champion older female Al Jabreiah.
  • Nadma (1987, by Northern Dancer) won one of her two starts. She is the second dam of 2015 New Zealand Stakes (NZ-G1) winner Sakhee’s Soldier.
  • Binya (1999, by Royal Solo) won the 2004 The Very One Handicap (USA-G3). She is the second dam of 2017 Sword Dancer Stakes (USA-G1) winner Sadler’s Joy and Grade 2 winner Wolfie’s Dynaghost.


Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Beaconaire was bred by John R. Gaines and Nelson Bunker Hunt. In 1995, she was exported to Germany, becoming the property of Gestüt Hof Iserneichen. Her last registered foal, Binya, was born in 1999.

Kittiwake is the second dam of 1988 Coronation Stakes (ENG-G1) winner Magic of Life and is the third dam of Grade/Group 2 winners Enthused, Prince of Andros, and Surya.


Returning to Beaconaire, she is also a half sister to multiple Grade 3 winner Oilfield (by Hail to Reason) and to Blanche Du Bois (by Green Dancer), the second dam of 2003 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (USA-G1) winner Film Maker and multiple Argentine Group 3 Woodgreen. In addition, Beaconaire is a half sister to Galexcel (by Exceller), second dam of Irish Group 3 winner Red Feather, and to Starkling (by Graustark), third dam of 2010 Triple Bend Handicap (USA-G1) winner E Z’s Gentleman.

Beaconaire and her siblings are out of multiple stakes winner Ole Liz, whose full sister, Bourbon Mist, is the dam of stakes winner Fire Water (by Tom Rolfe), the second dam of two-time American champion Life’s Magic and English Group 3 winner Romeo Romani, and the third dam of 2000 European champion sprinter Nuclear Debate, two-time Prix Royal-Oak (FR-G1) winner Amilynx, French Group 2 winner Amiwain, and Group 3 winners Chicarica and Frenchman’s Bay. Ole Liz is also a half sister to stakes winners I Want You (by Pago Pago) and Norman Regret (by Cornish Prince).

Ole Liz and her siblings were produced from the stakes-winning Roman mare Islay Mist, whose half sister Taboo (by Native Dancer) won a division of the 1961 Santa Monica Handicap. Produced from Evening Mist (by Eight Thirty), Islay Mist is also a half sister to Egyptian (by Heliopolis), dam of stakes winner Mongolia (by Mongo), second dam of 1977 Matchmaker Handicap (USA-G1) winner Mississippi Mud, and third dam of multiple Grade 2 winner and American champion broodmare sire Dixieland Band, 1980 Delaware Oaks (USA-G1) winner Bishop’s Ring, and Grade 3 winner Pewter Grey.
