Belle Jeep followed an unlikely path to Kentucky Broodmare of the Year honors. Unraced and with a decent but not particularly impressive pedigree, she was put to Jet Jewel, a well-bred horse but one found sadly wanting on the racetrack. The result of this union was Jewel’s Reward, the American co-champion juvenile of 1957 and the primary reason for his dam’s title. Belle Jeep’s overall produce record is remarkable given the indifferent quality of most of her mates, but her daughters were unable to carry on at the same level.
