Bold Fascinator (USA)

May 6, 1968 – c. 1989

Bold Lad (USA) x Lysistrata (USA), by Palestinian (USA)

Family 17-b

Bold Fascinator was something of an oddity, as she was rated the French champion 2-year-old filly of 1970 after failing to win a stakes race that year. One of her placings was a second in all-aged company in the Prix de la Forêt, however, and she proved that her championship was not entirely anomalous by winning the classic Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French One Thousand Guineas, FR-G1) as a 3-year-old. She was only modestly successful as a broodmare and had no lasting impact.

Race record

12 starts, 3 wins, 4 seconds, 2 thirds

1970:
  • 2nd Prix de la Foret (FR, 1400mT, Longchamp)
  • 3rd Criterium des Pouliches (FR, 1600mT, Longchamp)

1971:
  • Won Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (FR-G1, 1600mT, Longchamp)
  • Won Prix de la Grotte (FR-G3, 1600mT, Longchamp)
  • 3rd Prix du Rond-Point (FR-G3, 1600mT, Deauville)

Honors

French champion 2-year-old filly (1970)

Assessments

Rated at 122 pounds by Timeform as a 3-year-old.

As an individual

A gray mare, Bold Fascinator did not stay past 1600 meters (about one mile). She preferred fast going.

As a producer

Bold Fascinator produced seven named foals, of which six started and three won. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Fascinating Hussy (1973, by Vienna) placed third once from 12 races. She is the second dam of Grade 3 winner Eequalsmcsquared.
  • Audacious Rullah (1983, by Naskra) won the Atherton Stakes at Bay Meadows as a 3-year-old.

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Bold Fascinator was bred by Warner L. Jones Jr. and the Clay Ward Insurance Agency. Purchased for $120,000 as a yearling, she was owned by Wendell Rosso and was trained by John Fellows. She was ridden to her win in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches by William James “Bill” Williamson. She produced her first four foals for Rosso before being sold to Stratford Farms Associates. The last report of her in produce records indicate that she slipped foal in 1989.

Pedigree notes

Bold Fascinator is outcrossed through five generations. She is a half sister to 1967 Flamingo Stakes winner Reflected Glory (by Jester) and to 1965 Governor’s Gold Cup winner Isle of Greece (by Porterhouse).

Bold Fascinator and her siblings are out of the winner Lysistrata, whose sire Palestinian (by Sun Again) won the 1951 Brooklyn Handicap and other good races. Lysistrata is a half sister to 1952 Jersey Stakes winner King Jolie (by Platter) and to Classic Music (by Stymie), dam of 1963 Chicagoan Stakes winner B. Major (by Summer Tan), second dam of 1977 American champion sprinter What a Summer and Grade 3 winners Proponent and Sweet Old Girl; and third dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Danzig Connection, 1985 Widener Handicap (USA-G1) winner Pine Circle, Grade 2 winner Roi Danzig, and Grade 3 winners Gather the Clan and Oriental.

Lysistrata, in turn, is out of Jaconda (by Belfonds), a half sister to 1947 American champion 3-year-old male Phalanx (by Pilate). Produced from 1937 American champion 3-year-old filly Jacola (by Jacopo), a half sister to 1939 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Johnstown (by Jamestown), Jaconda is also a half sister to Phoenix Girl (by Red Hannigan), dam of 1975 Michigan Mile and One-Eighth Handicap (USA-G2) winner Mr. Lucky Phoenix (by Lucky Debonair) and Puerto Rican stakes winner Miss Maite (by Swoon’s Son) and second dam of 1997 Puerto Rican champion 3-year-old filly Tintorera. In addition, Jaconda is a half sister to Lady Romance (by Rustom Sirdar), dam of stakes winner Gilbert B. (by Bolero U.).
