1911 – 1934
Stalwart (USA) x Miss Dolly (USA), by St. George (GB)
American Family 1
Bronzewing was one of the better fillies of her crop at 3 but is little remembered today, partly because she raced in the Midwest rather than on the more prestigious New York circuit. She was a fairly successful broodmare but her descendants did not breed on well.
Race record
41 starts, 6 wins, 8 seconds, 10 thirds, $9,732.
1914:
As an individual
A high-withered, deep-girthed chestnut filly with a well-laid shoulder, Bronzewing generally raced best when taken back and allowed to make one big run. She broke down during the running of the 1914 Latonia Derby after appearing sore during the post parade. She returned to racing at 4 but not at her previous level of performance and was retired at the end of the 1915 season.
As a producer
Bronzewing produced 11 foals, of which 1922 Latonia Oaks winner Margaret Winsor (by St. Blaise) was much the best. She produced seven other winners from a total of nine starters including stakes-placed Drowsy Waters (by Cataract) and Nellie Lyons (by Huon). The latter is the dam of stakes winner Syl's Jimmy (by St. Germans or Halcyon).
Connections
Bronzewing was bred by G. D. Wilson at his Iroquois Stud. She was owned by Alexander P. Humphrey, Jr., who purchased her for US$200 at the Lexington sales when she was a yearling. She was trained by Dan Lehan, who may have also been a partner in her, and was ridden to her Kentucky Oaks win by William Obert. After she produced her first foal, Humphrey sold her to Lehan, who owned her for the remainder of her broodmare career. Bronzewing was barren in 1931-1933 and died in 1934. She was buried on Lehan's farm, where a monument was raised to her memory.
Pedigree notes
Sired by 1903 Champagne Stakes winner Stalwart (a son of two-time American champion sire Meddler), Bronzewing is outcrossed through five generations. Her dam Miss Dolly was exported to Chile shortly after Bronzewing's birth but is a half sister to stakes winner Uncas Chief (by Ben Strome). The next dam in the tail-female line, Passion Flower (by Bramble) is out of the Strachino mare Elizabeth, whose half sister Albia (by Alarm) is the dam of 1892 Kentucky Derby winner Azra (by Reform) and the second dam of 1896 Kentucky Derby winner Ben Brush.
Books and media
Bronzewing is profiled in Chapter 4 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).

Fun facts:
- Bronzewing was the first filly to win the Bluegrass (or Blue Grass) Stakes, then contested at the old Lexington Association track.
- Bronzewing was one of three Kentucky Oaks winners to earn a placing in the Kentucky Derby; the others were Flamma (1912) and Viva America (1918). All three fillies ran third in the Derby.
