Believe It (USA) x Bury the Hatchet (USA), by Tom Rolfe (USA)
Family 2-n
While Buryyourbelief may have been unlucky to not become a stakes winner prior to her victory in the 1987 Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1), she never won another race afterward. (In fairness to her, a virus contracted in the summer after her Kentucky Oaks score may have been a factor in her later failures.) She died on the track as a 4-year-old and is mostly memorable for being the first New York-bred to win the “Lilies for the Fillies.”
Race record
21 starts, 3 wins, 5 seconds, 3 thirds, US$308,879
1987:
Assessments
Rated at 117 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American-raced 3-year-old fillies of 1987, 7 pounds below co-highweights Sacahuista (the official divisional champion) and Personal Ensign.
As an individual
A bay filly, Buryyourbelief was fractious and nervous as a juvenile but settled down with increased maturity. She was honest and hard-trying on the track. She was humanely destroyed after suffering a serious knee injury during a turf race on September 3, 1988, at Del Mar.
Connections
Foaled at Braywood Farm near Glens Falls, New York, Buryyourbelief was bred and owned by Dana S. Bray Jr., who considered the filly to be “a member of the family” after his then 13-year-old daughter Mia assisted with the filly's foaling. Buryyourbelief was trained by Laz Barrera. She was ridden to her Kentucky Oaks score by Jose Santos.
Pedigree notes
Sired by 1978 Wood Memorial Stakes (USA-G1) winner Believe It (a son of In Reality), Buryyourbelief is outcrossed through five generations. She is a full sister to Pretty Persuasive, dam of 1995 Alabama Stakes (USA-G1) winner Pretty Discreet (by Private Account). Pretty Discreet, in turn, is the dam of 2006 Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile Handicap (USA-G1) winner Discreet Cat (by Forestry), 2010 King's Bishop Stakes (USA-G1) winner Discreetly Mine (by Mineshaft), and Grade 1-placed multiple stakes winner Pretty Wild (by Wild Again) and is the second dam of four stakes winners including 2011 Ogden Phipps Handicap (USA-G1) winner Awesome Maria.
Returning to Buryyourbelief, she is also a half sister to Hide My Grades (by Honor Grades), dam of South African listed stakes winner Graduation Day (by Trippi). The sisters are out of the unraced Tom Rolfe mare Bury the Hatchet, a half sister to multiple Jamaican listed stakes winner Mr. Nutcracker (by Mr. Prospector) and to Key to the North (by Key to the Mint), dam of restricted stakes winner Straight South (by Hail the Pirates), second dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Bending Strings, and third dam of Canadian Grade 3 winner Bangkok.
Bury the Hatchet, in turn, is out of the stakes-placed Northern Dancer mare Christmas Wishes, who was produced from the Mahmoud mare Happy Mood. A full sister to 1969 Canadian Oaks winner and important producer Cool Mood, Christmas Wishes is also a half sister to Canadian stakes winner Miss Suzaki (by Tompion), dam of Grade 3 winner Coverack (by Cornish Prince) and multiple stakes winner Go to the Bank (by Bold Hour). In addition, Christmas Wishes is a half sister to Laurel Festival (by Hill Prince), second dam of Grade 2 winner Simple Magic.
