1944 was a weak year for 3-year-old males in the United Stakes, and By Jimminy was champion more or less by default, having beaten both dual Classic winner Pensive and Belmont Stakes winner Bounding Home during the latter part of the season. None of these colts were considered anything close to a match for the season's champion filly and Horse of the Year, Twilight Tear, and By Jimminy failed to distinguish himself as a stallion other than as the sire of 1951 Preakness Stakes winner Bold and of Highland Fling, dam of 1959 American Horse of the Year Sword Dancer.

Honors
American champion 3-year-old male (1944)
As an individual
A racy-looking brown horse, By Jimminy had much of the elegance of his maternal grandsire, Blue Larkspur, but was light-boned and had suspicious-looking ankles. He was a front runner by choice.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, By Jimminy sired 79 winners (57.7%) and three stakes winners (2.2%) from 137 named foals.
Notable progeny
Bold (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, By Jimminy was bred by Colonel Edward Riley Bradley's Idle Hour Stock Farm. He was owned by Alfred P. Parker, who purchased the colt for US$1,300 from the Breeders' Sales Company's fall sale at Keeneland, and was trained by James W. Smith.
Pedigree notes
By Jimminy is outcrossed through five generations but is the produce of two inbred parents as his sire Pharamond II shows crosses of 3x4 to 1899 Ascot Gold Cup winner Cyllene and 4x3 to unbeaten champion St. Simon while his dam Buginarug is 3x2 to Black Toney. He is a brother in blood to 1942 Saranac Handicap winner Bless Me (by Sickle). He is also a half brother to Galipoli (by Heliopolis), dam of stakes winner Karoc (by Djeddah) and second dam of four minor stakes winners; to Windup (by Better Self), third dam of Grade II winner Prince Spellbound; and to War Bug (by War Admiral), third dam of Grade III winner Judgable Gypsy.
By Jimminy's dam Buginarug is a winning half sister to Boiling Water (by Bubbling Over), dam of 1943 Vineland Handicap winner Barbara Childs (by Clock Tower), and to Busy Fingers (by Burgoo King), dam of Canadian stakes winner Pianist (by Lambethdale). The next dam in By Jimminy's tail-female line, Breakfast Bell (by Black Toney), is a stakes-winning half sister to 1937 Santa Susana Stakes winner Patty Cake (by Blue Larkspur) and to 1931 Cuban Grand National Handicap winner Boys Howdy (by Bubbling Over) and was produced from the Buckwheat mare Batter Cake, a stakes-winning half sister to stakes winner Betty Beall (by North Star III) and the ancestress of 1988 American Horse of the Year Alysheba. This family entered the United States through Batter Cake's dam Macaroon (by Marco), who was imported to the United States in 1915,

Fun facts
- After Twilight Tear was upset in the 1944 Alabama Stakes, By Jimminy's owner, Alfred Parker, was reportedly seeking a match race between his colt and the filly. The proposal was quietly withdrawn after Twilight Tear got back to the races in October and blistered 5½ furlongs in 1:03-2/5 down Belmont's Widener Chute in her first outing off the layoff.
