Candy Stripes had ability but was not very sound, and a Classic placing in France was the pinnacle of his brief racing career. Sent to Argentina for stud duty, he did well but was not able to replicate his success when during stints in North America. His greatest successes in North America were with his South American-bred sons Invasor, the 2006 American Horse of the Year, and Leroidesanimaux, the American champion turf male of 2005. The sire of a worthy successor in Equal Stripes, Candy Stripes is also the broodmare sire of the Argentine champion and successful North American sire Candy Ride.
Race record
6 starts, 2 wins, 1 seconds, 0 thirds, US$47,357 (converted from French earnings)
1985:
Assessments
Earned a Timeform rating of 115 pounds as a 3-year-old.
As an individual
A handsome chestnut horse of great quality and refinement, Candy Stripes had the rather flat withers, strong hindquarters and short cannons typical of his sire's progeny. Offset knees contributed to his soundness issues. He stood 15.3 hands.
As a stallion
Candy Stripes earned the Pellegrini Award as the Argentine Stallion of the Year in 1995 and 2000. The Jockey Club credits Candy Stripes with siring 496 winners (49.0%) and 58 stakes winners (5.7%) from 1012 named foals, but records for his South American-sired progeny may be incomplete. The Blood-Horse credits Candy Stripes with 61 stakes winners (6.0%).

Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Candy Stripes was bred by Allen Cowen, who sold him for US$300,000 at the 1983 Keeneland July sale. The buyer was Mahmoud Fustok, who sent Candy Stripes to Georges Mikhalidès for training. Candy Stripes initially stood as a private stallion for A. G. Chaundry of Maryland but sired just seven foals during the two seasons he stood there. He then transferred to Alejandro Menditeguy's Haras Abolengo in Argentina, standing his first Southern Hemisphere season in 1989. He shuttled to Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky for the Northern Hemisphere season in 1997 and 1998 and stood at Stoneriggs Farm near Ocala, Florida, in 2000. Following the 2000 Northern Hemisphere season, Candy Stripes went back to Argentina for good, standing the remainder of his stud career at Joaquin Barros Fontaine's Haras Carampangue. He died of colic in 2007.
