Canina was a hardy mare but more notable for her toughness than her brilliance, though she did add her name to the list of Kentucky Oaks winners. A rough measure of her class is her second-place finish to the great Busher in the 1946 Vanity Handicap, in which she (then a 5-year-old) carried 114 pounds against 126 on the 3-year-old champion and was beaten an easy two lengths. Canina was a successful broodmare in a short producing career but had little lasting influence on pedigrees.

Connections
Canina was bred in Kentucky by E. Dale Shaffer's Coldstream Stud and began her racing career in Shaffer's colors. In October 1943, she was claimed for US$3,000 by Abe Hirschberg, who owned her for the rest of her racing career. She was trained by Frank E. Childs and later by Bob Roberts and was ridden to her Kentucky Oaks score by John Adams. She was a broodmare at Mereworth Stud in Kentucky and died there in 1962.
Pedigree notes
Canina is inbred 3x4 to 1906 Derby Stakes winner Spearmint. She is a half sister to Sandy Pam (by Heliopolis), dam of 1962 Saratoga Special winner Mr. Cold Storage (by Arctic Prince).
Canina was produced from Coronium, a winning daughter of 1924 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) winner Pot au Feu. A half sister to Sweet Scent (by Bunting), dam of 1949 Louisiana Derby winner Rookwood (by Islam), Coronium is out of Bird Call, who was imported to the United States in 1924 and was sired by Polymelus or his English Triple Crown-winning son Pommern. The next dam in Canina's tail-female line, Bird I' th' Hand (by Gallinule) also produced the minor English stakes winner Pamfleta (by William the Third; dam of 1922 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Paola, by The Tetrarch) and is out of Bush (by Bushey Park), whose stakes-winning half sister Bromus (by Sainfoin) produced two-time English champion sire Phalaris (by Polymelus).

Canina is profiled in Chapter 7 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).
