Carols Christmas was not particularly classy and had less in the way of looks than class. She also had an offbeat pedigree well removed from the breeding fashions of her time. What she did have going for her as a prospective broodmare was natural speed, along with the kind of physical and mental traits that make for consistent performance, and these traits helped make her a foundation mare for Verne Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds. A fine broodmare in her own right, she founded a family that, generation after generation, has continued to pass along its physical and mental toughness and its consistency to its better members.
Race record
12 starts, 4 wins, 3 seconds, 0 thirds, US$39,170
As an individual
A dark bay or brown mare, Carols Christmas was speedy but was also unattractive and swaybacked. Fortunately, she did not pass on her undesirable physical appearance to her foals.
As a producer
A Reine-de-Course as designated by pedigree analyst Ellen Parker, Carols Christmas produced 10 named foals. Of these, eight started and won. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Carols Christmas was bred by Virgil Hash and Kinney Hounshell. She was sold for US$3,200 to Johnny Jones as a newly turned yearling and was resold to Wayne Spurling for US$4,000 in September 1978. After being claimed for US$25,000 in March 1981, she was owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, which kept her for the remainder of her life. She died in 2000.
Pedigree notes
Sired by multiple juvenile stakes winner Whitesburg (by Crimson Satan), Carols Christmas is outcrossed through five generations. She is a half sister to Group 3-placed English stakes winner Al Stanza (by Al Hattab), dam of German steeplechase stakes winner Assagai. She is also a half sister to River Chant (by Upper Nile), third dam of 2004 La Troienne Stakes (USA-G1) winner On Fire Baby and Grade 2 winner High Heels.
Carols Christmas and her sisters are out of unraced Light Verse (by 1968 Michigan Derby winner Reverse, by Turn-to), whose multiple stakes-winning half sister Weekend Fun (by Nashver) is the dam of multiple stakes winner Double the Money (by Nodouble) and the second dam of Grade 2 winner All Thee Power. Light Verse is also a half sister to Sun Rise View (by Joachim), dam of Peruvian stakes winner Dawn Goddess (by Raise a Regal).
The next dam in Carols Christmas’s tail-female line is the winner Brighton View, whose sire Tuscany (by The Rhymer) won eight stakes races including the 1953 Toboggan Handicap. Brighton View was produced from Evening Sun (by the minor stakes winner Fritz Maisel) and was from a female family that had not produced a good horse or broodmare in generations.
