Relaunch (USA) x Tizly (USA), by Lyphard (USA)
Family 9-g
A talented but fragile horse, Cee’s Tizzy was handicapped in his stud opportunities by his brief race record, by his back-at-the-knee conformation, and by a pedigree which, although good, could not be considered particularly fashionable. Fortunately, owner Cecelia Straub-Rubens believed in her horse and supported him as he went to stud in California. Cee’s Tizzy went on to sire two Eclipse Award winners and became a leading regional sire. He also continued the male line of the great Man o’ War through his champion son Tiznow, an important sire in his own right.
Race record
6 starts, 3 wins, 1 second, 1 third, US$173,150
1990:
Honors
California Racing Hall of Fame (inducted in 2022 based on stud accomplishments)
Assessments
Rated at 113 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old males of 1990, 14 pounds below champion Unbridled.
As an individual
A big, strong, well-balanced gray horse who had a good shoulder and excellent hindquarters but was slightly back at the knee, Cee’s Tizzy was held to closely resemble his sire Relaunch physically but had the attention-loving personality of his maternal grandsire, Lyphard. He possessed excellent speed and preferred to control the tempo from the front. He was forced to retire from racing due to a carpal fracture sustained during his third-place run in the 1990 Super Derby.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Cee’s Tizzy sired 387 winners (50.1%) and 28 stakes winners (3.7%) from 759 named foals.

Connections
Foaled in California, Cee’s Tizzy was bred by Lucy Respoli Racing Stable. A US$72,000 purchase from the 1988 Keeneland September yearling sale, he was owned by Cecelia Straub-Ruben’s Cee's Stable LLC (which later included members of Straub-Rubens’s family). Cee’s Tizzy entered stud in 1991 in California. In 1994, he moved to Harris Farms, where he stood until he was pensioned in 2011 due to declining fertility. He was humanely destroyed due to the infirmities of old age on October 19, 2015, and was buried in a corner of his paddock.
Pedigree notes
Cee’s Tizzy is outcrossed through five generations. He is a half brother to Otome Gokoro (by Judge Angelucci), second dam of two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Kitasan Black.
Cee’s Tizzy and Otome Gokoro are out of the winner Tizly, whose half sister Tizara (by Northern Dancer) produced the minor stakes winner Concurrent (by Relaunch). Tizly is also a half sister to Tiz a Looker (by Mr. Prospector), dam of restricted stakes winner Reallyaroan (by Imperial Falcon) and of Helion (by Riton), a listed stakes winner in Macau. Tiz a Looker is also the third dam of Grade 3 winner Harlington’s Rose.
Tizly and her siblings were produced from the Chilean-bred Tizna (by Trevieres), a tough mare who was a multiple Grade 1 winner in the United States. Tizna, in turn, was produced from Noris (by two-time Chilean champion sire Licencioso), whose full sister Red Lady is the dam of Chilean Group 2 winner Tiznadita (by Trevieres). The female line traces back to the English import Ante Diem, one of South America’s first great foundation mares.
