Challe Anne (USA)

1945 – c. 1950

Challedon (USA) x Victorious Ann (USA), by Victorian (USA)

Family 4-m

Picture
An inconsistent filly, Challe Anne scored by far the biggest victory of her racing career in the 1948 Kentucky Oaks. She enjoyed only a short broodmare career and left no lasting mark on Thoroughbred breeding.

Race record

34 starts, 5 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds, US$46,155

1948:
  • Won Kentucky Oaks (USA, 8.5FD, Churchill Downs)
  • Won Lincoln H. (USA, 10FD, Lincoln Fields)
  • 3rd Coaching Club American Oaks (USA, 11FD, Belmont)

As an individual

A black mare; no further information available.

As a producer

Challe Anne produced only one foal, the winning Polynesian filly Burma Girl. Burma Girl, in turn, produced seven winners from eight foals but nothing of any significance.

Connections

Challe Anne was bred and owned by Fred L. Flanders. She was trained by W. U. Ridenour.

Pedigree notes

Challe Anne is inbred 5x5 to 1893 English Triple Crown winner Isinglass. She is a half sister to Prabeau (by Alibhai), third dam of Brazilian Group II winner Black Jack and Brazilian Group III winner Antenada.

Victorious Ann, the dam of Challe Anne, is a stakes-placed half sister to stakes winner Dogmata (by Dozer). Their dam Annie Jordan (by Peter Pan) was stakes-placed as a juvenile and is a half sister to 1921 Gazelle Stakes winner Banksia and minor stakes winner Pinard, both by His Majesty. Annie Jordan is also a half sister to Polyantha (by Broomstick), dam of stakes winners Propus (by North Star III) and Polygamous (by Stefan the Great) and second dam of 1935 National Stallion Stakes winner Delphinium.

The next dam in Challe Anne's tail-female line, Early Rose, is a Star Shoot half sister to 1921 Maryland Handicap winner Copper Demon (by Ormondale). Their dam, Lady Bedford (by Ogden), also produced Simpatica (by Friar Rock), dam of 1932 Kentucky Oaks winner Suntica (by Sun Briar), multiple stakes-winning juvenile Try Sympathy (by Tryster) and stakes winner Starpatic (by Star Master); Sweet Brier (by Star Shoot), dam of 1929 Latonia Cup winner Ben Machree (by Man o' War's full brother Playfellow) and six-time stakes winner Joy Smoke (by Sir Martin); and Star Class (by Star Shoot), dam of 1937 Toboggan Handicap and Fall Highweight Handicap winner Preeminent (by Supremus) and multiple stakes winner McAuliffe (by Spanish Prince II)
