Cinegita evidenced talent in a rather short racing career, but she has been far more important as a broodmare. The dam of two stakes winners and a champion sire in Brazil, she has several champions among her descendants.
Race record
7 starts, 3 wins, 0 seconds, 1 third, US$54,050
1980:
Assessments
Rated at 111 pounds on the Daily Racing Form’s Free Handicap for American 3-year-old fillies of 1980, 15 pounds below co-highweights Genuine Risk (the official divisional champion) and Bold ‘n Determined.
As an individual
A bay mare, Cinegita had good all-around conformation and an excellent disposition. She was expected to contest the Princess Stakes (USA-G2) at Hollywood following her Railbird victory but was withdrawn and never raced again, suggesting a career-ending injury.
As a producer
Cinegita produced 13 named foals, of which nine were starters and six were winners. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Cinegita was bred by Nelson Bunker Hunt. A US$340,000 yearling from the 1988 Keeneland July sale, she was owned by Barry Beal and Robert French and was trained by D. Wayne Lukas. Following her racing career, she passed to the ownership of Ashford Stud partner Dr. William Lockridge, along with the similarly sired Terlingua, and both were bred to Storm Bird in 1982. Later that year, both mares was purchased by William T. Young to become broodmares for his Overbrook Farm, where Cinegita died in 1997. She was buried at Overbrook.
Pedigree notes
Cinegita is outcrossed through five generations. A half sister to French stakes winner Anthurium (by Never Bend), she is out of 1973 Little Silver Handicap (USA-G3) winner Wanika, whose sire Sadair was rated the second-best American juvenile of 1964 after wins in the Arlington-Washington Futurity and Pimlico Futurity.
Wanika was the only foal produced from 1965 Delaware Oaks winner Juanita (by two-time American champion sprinter Decathlon). A half sister to juvenile stakes winner Red Hook (by Royal Sting) and French hurdle stakes winner Porto Novo (by Hill Rise), Juanita is also a half sister to stakes-placed Junonia (by Sun Again), dam of the stakes winner and good sire Northern Jove (by Northern Dancer), second dam of 1993 Swiss champion 3-year-old male Badolato, and third dam of 1999 Canadian champion 3-year-old male Woodcarver.
Juanita is out of the winning Pavot mare Pavonia, whose half sister Turkish Delight (by Count Fleet) is the dam of stakes winner Needleson (by Needles). Pavonia, in turn, is out of 1949 Alabama Stakes winner Adile (by Mahmoud), a half sister to 1945 Gazelle Stakes winner and 1952 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Ace Card (by Case Ace).

- Storm Star (1983, by Storm Bird) won the 1985 Pritchard Services Cherry Hinton Stakes (ENG-G3). She is the dam of Grade 3 winner Dodge (by Mr. Prospector) and multiple listed stakes winner Captain Starbuck (by Cure the Blues) and is also the third dam of Puerto Rican champion and North American Grade 2 winner My Wandy’s Girl. In addition, she is the fourth dam of Chilean Horse of the Year Wow Cat, a winner of that country’s Triple Crown and a Grade 1 winner in the United States.
- Starlet Storm (1987, by Storm Bird) won both her starts but did not stay sound long enough to prove herself in stakes company. She is the dam of 1994 American champion 2-year-old filly Flanders (by Seeking the Gold); the second dam of 2000 American champion 3-year-old filly Surfside and Grade 2 winners Battle Plan and Fiery Pursuit; and the third dam of 2015 European champion 2-year-old male Air Force Blue, Grade 2 winner Open Water, and Grade 3 winners Irish Surf and Trophy Chaser.
- Choctaw Ridge (1989, by Mr. Prospector) was Grade 3-placed on the track. Exported to Brazil, he led the general sire list twice in that country.
- Windmill Point (1990, by Storm Bird) was unplaced in three starts but is the dam of multiple stakes winner Stormy Temper (by Conquistador Cielo).
- Syourinomegami (1991, by Mr. Prospector) won two listed stakes in Japan (by Japanese but not international standards, both Group events) but was a disappointing broodmare.

- Illustrated (1994, by Deputy Minister) placed third once in four starts. She is the second dam of 2013 Gran Premio Nacional Augusto B. Leguia (PER-G1) winner Overbrook and the third dam of Peruvian Group 2 winner Gluck.

Fun facts
- Cinegita won the Railbird Stakes in a swift 1:20-4/5 for the 7 furlongs, just a second off Triple Bend's American record for the distance.
- Cinegita’s daughter Storm Star was the first stakes winner for Storm Bird and was also the first stakes winner bred by Young, who registered the filly as bred by “W. T. Young Storage.”
- After Cinegita’s granddaughter Flanders suffered career-ending injuries in the 1994 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (USA-G1), Cinegita was turned out in a small paddock with her as a babysitter to help keep Flanders quiet while her injuries healed. Apparently, it worked, as Flanders recovered to become a fine broodmare.
