Family 9-h
Cipayo was stoutly bred but proved possessed of precocious speed. How much stamina he had was a moot point as he was injured and forced into retirement before he could be fully tried. He proved an excellent stallion in spite of moving about between stud farms more than is commonly the case for a top sire. Three times the champion sire in Argentina, he was also a five-time champion broodmare sire whose influence is still felt today.

1977:
Honors
As an individual
A strongly-made, masculine bay horse with a plain, rather coarse head, Cipayo had an excellent shoulder, a short back, and good muscling extending well into his forearms and gaskins. He appeared slightly short-legged for his height. He could deliver an explosive burst of speed when racing. He was retired after fracturing a sesamoid by stepping in a hole while training for the Gran Premio Nacional (Argentine Derby, ARG-G1).
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Cipayo sired 234 winners (21.5%) and 58 stakes winners (5.3%) from 1090 foals of racing age, but it should be noted that the records of South American from this time period were often incomplete. The reference work Great Thoroughbred Sires of the World credits him with at least 65 stakes winners. Cipayo’s offspring were versatile regarding distance but usually preferred dirt to turf.

Connections
Cipayo was bred by Cesar Omar Pasarillo’s Haras Don Yeye and raced for Caballeriza Don Yeye. He was trained by Juan Esteban Bianchi and was ridden throughout his career by Mariana Lezcano. He stood at the Villamil family’s Haras La Irenita, at Haras Melencué, at Haras Don Yeye, at Haras Rodeo Chico, and at Haras Clausan at various points during his stud career. He died at the last-named stud on October 25, 2000.
Pedigree notes
Sired by Lacydon (a stakes-winning son of 1949 English champion older male and 1955 English champion sire Alycidon), Cipayo is inbred 4x4 to six-time English champion sire Hyperion, winner of the 1933 Derby Stakes and St. Leger Stakes. He is also inbred 5x4x5 to Hyperion’s sire, 1918 English Triple Crown winner Gainsborough, and 5x5 to three-time English champion sire Blandford. He is out of the English import Tsarina (by 1955 St. James’s Palace Stakes winner Tamerlane), whose half sister Gypsy Dream (by Darius II) is the dam of multiple Italian stakes winner Gino Trojan (by Signa Infesta).
Tsarina was produced from Secret Marriage, a daughter of two-time English champion Owen Tudor (by Hyperion) and a half sister to English stakes winners Good Business (by Chamossaire), Victory Way (by Never Say Die), and Welsh Way (by Abernant). The last-named mare is the dam of 1970 Cork and Orrery Stakes winner Welsh Saint (by St. Paddy). Secret Marriage is also a half sister to stakes-placed Lions Love (by Big Game), dam of English stakes winner Lion’s Mantle (by Djebe).
Winning Ways (by Fairway), the dam of Secret Marriage and her siblings, is a stakes-placed full sister to two-time English champion sprinter and important sire Honeyway, whose titles are somewhat misleading as he stayed well enough to win the 1946 Champion Stakes over 10 furlongs. Produced from the Papyrus mare Honey Buzzard, Winning Ways is also a full sister to Fair Honey, dam of 1962 Japanese champion 3-year-old male Fair Win (by Gay Time). In addition, Winning Ways is a half sister to English stakes winners Tudor Honey (by Owen Tudor), Roman Buzzard (by Watling Street), and Beedeck (by Admiral’s Walk), as well as the stakes-winning steeplechaser The Beak (by Portlaw). Finally, Winning Ways is a half sister to stakes-placed Run Honey (by Hyperion), dam of 1956 Coventry Stakes winner Messmate (by Blue Peter), 1960 Oaks Trial Stakes winner Running Blue (by Blue Peter), and 1963 July Stakes winner Endless Honey (by Never Say Die) and second dam of 1970 Ladies Handicap winner Cathy Honey, 1967 Blandford Stakes winner Dominion Day II, 1970 Prix Perth winner Lord Gayle, 1971 Del Mar Derby winner Regal Case, Irish Group 2 winner Sir Penfro, and Group 3 winners Banjer, I’ve a Bee, Never Return, and Northern Tavern.
