Clackson showed ability as a youngster but did not reach his peak form until 1981/82, when he was the reigning champion of Sao Paulo’s main racetrack, Cidade Jardim. He raced in Argentina and Peru as well as Brazil but did not fare well outside his native country. Following his retirement, he became a champion sire in Brazil and was also an important broodmare sire.

A handsome, well-balanced chestnut horse with a good shoulder and a strong, muscular body, Clackson could act on both dirt and turf and stayed very well. He was reportedly very ill-tempered.

Sired by 1966 Coronation Cup winner I Say (by 1947 English champion 3-year-old male Sayajirao, by Nearco), Clackson is inbred 4x4 to 1924 Champion Stakes winner Pharos, a champion sire in both England and France..He is out of Quarana (by the stakes-winning Pharis horse Pharas), winner of the 1973 Grande Prêmio 25 de Janeiro (later a Group 2 race). Quarana, in turn, is out of Coaran, a daughter of1945 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) winner Coaraze (by Tourbillon).
Coaran was produced from Aldebara Princess (by stakes winner Peter’s Choice, by stakes winner Fairford, by Fairway), whose dam Nocera was sired by the stakes-placed English import Sea Bequest from the Argentine import Noceda. Noceda, in turn, is by 1929 Argentine champion 3-year-old male Tresiete out of Notita, who was sired by the stakes-placed Phalaris horse Grandpre. The female line has been in South America since the importation of the Irish-bred Peerage in 1882.
