Conda (ARG)

July 28, 1977 – c. 2001

Farley (ARG) x Clanga (ARG), by Parral (ARG)

Family 5-h
A brilliant miler, Conda won 10 of 13 starts and was out of the top three only once in her native Argentina, earning honors as the nation’s top miler and Mare of the Year in 1981. She was exported to the United States following her signature win in the Premio Perú (ARG-G2) but ran only once in North America, finishing out of the money. She was not a successful broodmare, but in fairness, she spent most of her breeding career being put to stallions that were substantially worse sires than racehorses.

Race record

14 starts, 10 wins, 1 second, 1 third

1981:
  • Won Premio Perú (ARG-G2, 1600mD, Palermo)
  • Won Premio Carlos Menditéguy (ARG-G3, 1600mD, Palermo)
  • Won Premio México (ARG-G3, Palermo)
  • Won Premio República Federativa (ARG, Palermo)
  • Won Premio Ricardo y Ezequiel Fernández Guerrico (ARG, 1600mT, San Isidro)
  • Won Premio Asocacion de Proprietarios de Caballos de Carrera (ARG, 1400mD, Palermo)
  • Won Premio General Las Heras (ARG, 1400mT, San Isidro)
  • 2nd Gran Premio Organizacion Sudamericana de Fomento del Sangre Pura de Carrera (ARG-G1, 1600mD, Palermo)
  • 3rd Premio Colombia (ARG, 1600mD, Palermo)

Honors
  • Pellegrini Award, Argentine Mare of the Year (1981)
  • Pellegrini Award, Argentine champion miler (1981)

As an individual

A chestnut mare; no further information available.

As a producer

Conda produced 11 named foals, of which nine started and eight won. None achieved distinction as racers or producers, though the descendants of her daughter Condalessent (by Plugged Nickle) had some success in Chile.

Connections

Conda was bred by Haras El Tala. Following her victory in the Premio Perú, she was exported to the United States. As a broodmare, she produced her first four foals for John Schiff before being sold for US$28,000 through the 1987 Keeneland November mixed sale, covered by Apalachee. After slipping that foal, she produced one foal for new owner Jimmy Hamilton and then went back through the sale ring, selling for US$15,000 to Renato Gameiro through the 1990 Keeneland January mixed sale. This may have been a buy-back, as following her repatriation to Argentina in January 1991, her first two Argentine-bred foals appear in The Jockey Club’s records as having been bred by Hamilton. Conda then passed to the ownership of Pedro Manuel Crespo, who according to the Stud Book Argentino bred her final four foals. There is no further record of Conda after the birth of her 2001 foal, Condita (by Il Corsaro).

Pedigree notes

Sired by Argentine stakes winner Farley (by 1972 Argentine champion sire Idle Hour), Conda is outcrossed through five generations. She is a full sister to Claiman, third dam of Argentine Group 2 winner Condoleeza Slew.

Conda is out of Clanga, whose sire Parral was acknowledged as the Argentine champion miler of 1956 after winning the Gran Premio Palermo and other important races. A half sister to multiple stakes winner Ingeniero White (by Richer), Clanga was produced from 1953 Polla de Potrancas (Argentine One Thousand Guineas) winner Claro de Luna (by 1946 Irish Two Thousand Guineas winner and 1968 Argentine champion broodmare sire Claro), whose full sister Clarobella is the second dam of Argentine Group 2 winner Dark Body. Claro de Luna is also a half sister to Snow Bell (by Snow Cat), dam of 1978 Premio Buenos Aires (ARG-G2) winner El Enologo (by El Abra).

Cascabelera, the dam of Claro de Luna and her sisters, is by 1950 Argentine champion broodmare sire Lord Wembley out of Cartagenera, whose sire Macon was unbeaten in 15 starts and was much the best racehorse of Argentina’s 1922 foal crop. The next mare in Conda’s tail-female line is 1919 Polla de Potrancas and Gran Premio Selección (Argentine Oaks) winner Cartagena, by the great Argentine racer and sire Old Man out of the French import Carabine (by French stakes winner The Minstrel).
