Constitution (USA)

February 11, 2011 – Living

Tapit (USA) x Baffled (USA), by Distorted Humor (USA)

Family 8-k

Constitution did not have a long racing career but made his limited time on the track count, becoming a Grade 1 winner at ages 3 and 4. To date, he is the most accomplished sire son of Tapit, earning three sire championships in Chile and ranking among the leading sires in the United States.

Race record

8 starts, 4 wins, 0 seconds, 1 thirds, US$1,031,596

2014:
  • Won Besilu Stables Florida Derby (USA-G1, 9FD, Gulfstream Park)
  • 3rd Clark Handicap (USA-G1, 9FD, Churchill Downs)

2015:
  • Won Donn Handicap (USA-G1, 9FD, Gulfstream Park)

Assessments

Rated at 115 pounds in the Mile category on the 2014 Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings, 15 pounds below overall highweight Just a Way (the Japanese champion older male) and 10 pounds below the top-ranked 3-year-old on dirt, Breeders’ Cup Classic (USA-G1) winner Bayern.

Rated at 116 pounds in the Mile category on the 2015 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 18 pounds below overall highweight American Pharoah (the American Horse of the Year) and 10 pounds below the top-rated older male on dirt, Shared Belief.

As an individual

A rangy bay horse, Constitution has the look of a two-turn horse with a good shoulder, strong but not bulky hindquarters, and plenty of leg and scope. His hind legs have a little more angulation than is typical for a top American dirt runner.

As a stallion

Constitution is generally considered a sire of two-turn horses. He has been criticized for passing on some of Tapit’s quirky disposition.

Fun facts
  • A constitution is a system of beliefs and laws governing a country, state, or organization, usually in written form. The word “constitution” can also be used to refer to the physical health or condition of a human being or an animal, generally as viewed over a reasonably substantial period of time given the lifespan of the being in question.
