At the time that she was foaled, Dayatthespa was considered a modestly-bred filly suitable for a regional racing market. She became part of a breakout year for her sire, City Zip, who became known as one of the most versatile stallions of the early 21st century. A solid turf filly throughout her racing career, Dayatthespa reached her peak as a 5-year-old in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (USA-G1). She is now having success as a broodmare.

Assessments
Rated at 116 pounds in the Mile category on the 2012 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 24 pounds below overall highweight Frankel (the European Horse of the Year and also tops in the Mile category) and 14 pounds below the best filly or mare, Australian Horse of the Year Black Caviar.
Rated at 115 pounds in the Mile and Intermediate categories on the 2014 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 15 pounds below overall highweight Just a Way (the Japanese champion older male, who also topped the Mile category) and 11 pounds below the top filly or mare, multiple European highweight Treve.
As an individual
A chestnut mare, Dayatthespa is crooked in front and does not walk particularly well but was a much better mover at racing speed. She has a solid, powerful body and a strong hind leg. She was at her best over firm to good going and generally preferred to be close to the pace.
As a producer
As of November 17, 2024, Dayatthespa has produced five named foals of racing age; three have started and won. The best thus far is Spaliday (by More Than Ready), winner of the 2024 Sands Point Stakes (USA-G2).
Connections
Foaled in New York, Dayatthespa was bred by Castellare DiCracchiolo Stable, Cracchiolo, and Goldsher. A US$50,000 yearling at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton New York-bred preferred yearling sale, she was withdrawn from the 2011 Ocala Breeders' Sales March sale of 2-year-olds in training after failing to attract sufficient interest and was sold privately to Peter Bradley and Steve Laymon. As a racer, she was owned by Jerry Frankel, Ronald Frankel, Steve Laymon, and Bradley Thoroughbreds. She was trained by Chad Brown and was ridden to her win in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf by Javier Castellano. She was sold to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings as a broodmare prospect for US$2.1 million through the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November sale.
Pedigree notes
Dayatthespa is outcrossed through five generations. She is the only foal of significance produced by M’Lady Doc, who was named the 2014 New York Broodmare of the Year based on her champion daughter’s accomplishments. Unplaced in seven starts, M’Lady Doc is by multiple listed stakes winner Doc’s Leader (by Mr. Leader) and is a full sister to 1999 Saranac Handicap (USA-G3) winner Phi Beta Doc and to Doc’s Leading Lady, dam of multiple stakes winner Spanish Pipedream (by Scat Daddy) and second dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Get Smokin (by Get Stormy). M’Lady Doc is also a half sister to listed stakes winner Queen Mary’s Boy (by Full Pocket).
M’Lady Doc and her siblings are out of Smart Queen (by multiple Grade 1 winner King Pellinore, by Round Table), a half sister to multiple Grade 2 winner Clev Er Tell (by Tell). Unplaced in three starts, Smart Queen is also a half sister to Dam Clever (by Damascus), dam of 1994 Santa Ynez Breeders’ Cup Stakes (USA-G2) winner Tricky Code (by Lost Code) and listed stakes winner Marq of Beauty (by Marquetry) and second dam of 2005 Japanese champion sprinter Hat Trick, the Brazilian champion sire of 2022/23.
Clever Bird, the dam of Smart Queen and her siblings, was unplaced in her only start. Sired by Swoon’s Son out of the winning Alibhai mare Sally Catbird, she is a half sister to 1964 Royal Poinciana Handicap winner Lester (by Hasty Road) and to Ruling Bird (by Young Emperor), dam of stakes winners Rosa d’Argent (by Full Pocket) and Ruling Music (by Stop the Music).

Fun facts
- Dayatthespa became the namesake for a stakes race at Gulfstream Park.
- Dayatthespa was the first New-York bred to win one of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup events. (The previous year, New York-bred London Bridge had become the first horse bred in the state to capture a Breeders’ Cup race, but this was a Grade 2 event.)
