Dynaformer was not bred for a sweet disposition. His paternal grandsire Hail to Reason was a notably tough horse; his sire Roberto was moody and nobody's sweetheart; and his broodmare sire His Majesty was a son of Ribot, a horse with a reputation for passing on the volatile temperament he developed as a stallion. Given his lineage, it was perhaps no wonder that Dynaformer's trainer D. Wayne Lukas described him as “the most difficult horse I ever trained”--and that was even before he went to stud, where his nature did not sweeten. In addition, Dynaformer was not particularly attractive, nor did he boast a stellar race record. Nonetheless, Dynaformer forged his own path to stud success, becoming noted as one of the best modern sources of stamina in the American Thoroughbred.

Assessments
Rated at 116 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old males of 1988, 11 pounds below champion Risen Star.
As an individual
Registered as a dark bay or brown, Dynaformer stood 17 hands and was coarse and angular but essentially correct. He had an excellent shoulder and a deep girth. He was aggressive and highly dominant in disposition and extremely territorial about his stall and paddock; as Three Chimneys Farm stallion manager Sandy Hatfield said, Dynaformer “commanded respect and total attention at all times.”
As a stallion
Statistics compiled by The Jockey Club credit Dynaformer with siring 873 winners (65.0%) and 131 stakes winners (9.8%) from 1343 named foals. He was noted as a source of stamina, bone, scope and soundness, although his progeny were not particularly attractive and generally needed time to mature.
