El Picaro was bred by Haras Paso Nevado. After failing to win or place in four North American starts, El Picaro was sent to Hong Kong, gelded, and renamed Hongkong Great. Under that name, he won the 2022 Singapore Gold Cup for owner Edmond Yue Kwok Yin. He is trained by Singapore by Ricardo Le Grange.

Pedigree notes

El Picaro is inbred 3x4 to two-time American champion sire Mr. Prospector and 5x4 to the great international sire Northern Dancer, the 1964 Canadian Horse of the Year and American champion 3-year-old male. He is out of unraced La Sinverguenza, whose full sister Cimalta was the Chilean champion 2-year-old turf filly of 2014/2015. La Sinverguenza is a half sister to multiple Chilean Group 1 winner El Farrero (by Powerscourt) and to Chilean listed stakes winner La Encacha (by Lookin At Lucky). She is also a half sister to Group 1-placed Capeadora (by Seeker’s Reward), second dam of 2018 Premio Las Oaks (Chilean Oaks, CHI-G1) winner La Canita, and to Siembra Cizana (by Seeker’s Reward), dam of 2010 Premio Augusto Mostajo Barrera (PER-G3) winner Cruella Deville (by Monthir).

La Sinverguenza’s dam, La Cimarra (by the winning Northern Dancer horse Northair), won the 1997 Premio Luis Davila Larrain (CHI-L). She is a half sister to stakes-placed Bacana (by Dushyantor), dam of Chilean Group 3 winner Bauxita (by Scat Daddy). She is also a half sister to Cienaga (by Seeker’s Reward), second dam of 2019 Premio Dos Mil Guineas (CHI-G1) winner Tokerau and third dam of Chilean Group 3 winner Exhausting.

Cimarrera, the dam of La Cimarra and her sisters, is a daughter of the French-bred Sir Gaylord horse Clasico.
