Enchanted Eve (USA)

1949 – c. 1971

Lovely Night (USA) x Poupee (USA), by Quatre Bras II (FR)

Family 4-r

“
GENETIC GEM”

Enchanted Eve was a solid staying filly in the mold of her sire, Lovely Night, but was not quite able to score a stakes win against top-level opponents. In the paddocks, she spent the bulk of her career being bred to regional stallions who were second-tier at best, but she outbred both her mates and her own modest antecedents to become a noteworthy foundation mare for Harry and Jane Lunger’s Christiana Stables, Aside from her champion daughter Tempted and the good stakes winner Smart, she produced five stakes-producing daughters who all had some long-term significance.

Race record

29 starts, 4 wins, 12 seconds, 2 thirds, US$32,300

1952:
  • 2nd Alabama Stakes (USA, 10FD, Saratoga)
  • 2nd Comely Handicap (USA, 8.5FD, Jamaica)
  • 3rd Ladies Handicap (USA, 12FD, Belmont)

As an individual

An attractive, feminine, rather light-framed mare who was perhaps a little too straight through her hocks, Enchanted Eve had a deep girth, a short back, and nicely muscled quarters and gaskins. She stayed well and preferred to come from off the pace, a style partly dictated by her tendency to get away slowly.

As a producer

Enchanted Eve produced 13 named foals; all started and 10 won. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Tempted (1955, by Half Crown) was the American champion handicap female of 1959. She is the dam of stakes winner Lead Me On (by Native Dancer) and the second dam of Italian Group 2 winner Nacacyte and Grade/Group 3 winners Bishop’s Choice, Adorable Micol, and Tell Me All. She is also the third dam of 1992 Prix du Jockey Club Lancia (French Derby, FR-G1) winner Polytain and multiple Grade 2 winner Channel Three. Her more distant descendants include 2021 Bahrainian Horse of the Year Medal Winner, four-time Jamaican champion Chadman, two-time Puerto Rican champion Exclusivo, 2024 Swedish co-champion 3-year-old male Lord Mountbatten, and 2016 Scandinavian champion 2-year-old filly Lady of Course. Tempted is also the ancestress of 2009 Malibu Stakes (USA-G1) winner M One Rifle, 2007 Del Mar Oaks (USA-G1) winner Rutherienne, and 2004 Stephen Foster Handicap (USA-G1) winner Colonial Colony.
  • Smart (1959, by Thinking Cap) won five good stakes races including the 1963 Manhattan Handicap in track record time. He sired four stakes winners from 114 foals.
  • Witching Hour (1960, by Thinking Cap) won three of her 15 starts. She is the dam of 1970 Futurity Stakes winner Salem (by Cyane), 1982 Alabama Stakes (USA-G1) winner Broom Dance (by Dance Spell), multiple Grade 2 winner Pumpkin Moonshine (by Cyane), and 1978 Test Stakes (USA-G3) winner Tingle Stone (by Cyane). She is also the second dam of Grade 3 winners End Sweep and Rousing Past and the third dam of multiple Argentine Group 2 winner Carpan. Her more distant descendants include 2012 Premio Polla de Potrancas (CHI-G1) winner La Porotita; Grade 2 winners Ciao Bella Luna, Cyber Secret and Pure Silver; and Peruvian Group 3 winner Maldita Primavera.
  • Set a Cap (1962, by Thinking Cap) won five of her 14 starts. She is the dam of multiple stakes winner Pinch Pie (by Cyane). Her more distant descendants include 2013 Premio Presidente della Republica (ITY-G1) winner Vedelago and Estruendo, a two-time champion in the Dominican Republic.
  • Kyrenia (1963, by Thinking Cap) won two of her 26 starts. She is the dam of Grade 1-placed stakes winner Enchanted Native (by Native Charger) and, through her, the second dam of 1987 San Antonio Handicap (USA-G1) winner Bedside Promise. Her more distant descendants include Grade 2 winner Holiday for Kitten.
  • Sigh Sigh (1965, by Cyane) placed third once from five starts. She is the dam of 1978 Italian champion 2-year-old male Ice Cool (by Icecapade) and stakes winner Biricchina (by Icecapade) and the second dam of multiple Grade 3 winner Soho Sunday. Her more distant descendants include 2025 Gran Premio de Honor (ARG-G1) winner Crazy Talent and Argentine Group 3 winner Egolatra Hei.
  • Instant Sin (1969, by Restless Native) won one of her three starts. She is the dam of 1978 Chrysanthemum Handicap (USA-G3) winner Misgivings (by Cyane) and the second dam of 1984 Arlington-Washington Lassie (USA-G1) winner Contredance, multiple Grade 2 winner Skimble, and Grade/Group 3 winners At Risk and Shotiche. She is also the third dam of Ecuadorian champion imported older horse Azulako, multiple Grade 1 winners Lazy Slusan and Skimming, 1996 Malibu Stakes (USA-G1) winner King of the Heap, 1999 One Thousand Guineas (ENG-G1) winner Wince, Grade/Group 2 winners Eltish and Fazel, and Grade 3 winner Forest Gazelle. Connections

Enchanted Eve was bred by William S. Clark. She was owned throughout her racing and producing careers by Christiana Stables (Harry Lunger and Jane duPont Lunger). She was trained by Duval Headley at 2 and by Howard Young at 3 and 4. The last report of her in the produce records is as not covered in 1971.

Pedigree notes

Enchanted Eve is outcrossed through five generations. A daughter of the good stakes winner Lovely Night (by Pilate)—a versatile horse who won stakes races on the flat and over hurdles—she is out of the winner Poupee, a half sister to multiple juvenile stakes winner Crownlet (by Half Crown). Poupee's sire, Quatre Bras II, is a full brother to American champion sires Sir Gallahad III and Bull Dog but was only a minor stakes winner and a useful but not outstanding sire.

Poupee is out of Marcella Miss (by Pharamond II), who won two of her 20 starts but distinguished herself mostly by surviving a fall down a well as a youngster. A half sister to multiple stakes winner The Choctaw (by Rouleau) and to Journey’s End (by Spanish Prince II), dam of multiple stakes winner Brown Hostess (by Brown King), Marcella Miss is out of Miss Marcella, a winning daughter of 1908 champion 2-year-old male Sir Martin.

Books and media

Enchanted Eve is one of 51 important matrons profiled in John Sparkman’s Foundation Mares: How Outstanding Female Families Shaped America's Breeding Industry (2008, Thoroughbred Times).

Fun facts
  • Although Enchanted Eve was officially recorded as bred by William Clark, she was effectively a Christiana Stables homebred. Her granddam, Marcella Miss, was purchased by Jane duPont Lunger for US$3,100 from the 1939 Audley Farm dispersal, and Christiana Stables bred Poupee from her, in turn breeding Enchanted Eve’s elder full brother Puppet (a stakes-placed runner) from Poupee. All of Poupee’s subsequent foals were on the record as being bred by Clark, but Christiana retained Enchanted Eve for racing and breeding.
  • Enchanted Eve made her first three starts in claiming races, winning her maiden effort with a US$6,000 tag, running second in a US$7,500 claimer, and winning in a race for US$9,000 claimers. After that, she was not risked again.
