Espirita was an exceptional 2-year-old in a vintage year for juveniles and trained on to become a high-class 3-year-old before injury ended her career. She was a far better broodmare than producer.
Race record
10 starts, 9 wins, 1 second, 0 thirds, 135,176 Argentine pesos
1910:
Honors
Argentine champion 2-year-old filly (1909/10)
As an individual
A chestnut mare of classic type, Espirita was a poor doer and difficult to keep in prime condition. She suffered a career-ending injury while being taken from her stable to the race track for exercise.
As a producer
Espirita produced at least five named foals but was a disappointing broodmare.
Connections
Espirita was bred by Adolfo and Rufino Luro at their Haras El Moro. She raced in the colors of the Luros' Caballeriza Petite Ecurie and was trained by Lauro de los Santos. Following her racing career, she was a broodmare at Haras El Moro and was in service at least through 1919, when her Saint Wolf colt Epiro was born.
Pedigree notes
Espirita is inbred 4x5 to 1849 Derby Stakes and St. Leger Stakes winner The Flying Dutchman. She was produced from Espuma, whose French-bred sire Wagram was by the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French Two Thousand Guineas) winner Xaintrailles. Espuma's dam Favorita (by the high-class stakes winner Fra Diavolo) was also imported from France and had originally been registered there as “Fermiere.” The female line traces back to the epochal matron Pocahontas through her daughter Heroine of Lucknow.
