A full sister to 1932 American champion sire Chatterton, Etoile Filante had a much greater long-term impact on American breeding. While her family has had something of a “hit or miss” quality, it has turned up a fair share of good ones through the years and continues to produce.

Foaled in Kentucky, Etoile Filante was bred by August Belmont II and, like the majority of the fillies he bred, was never raced due to his prejudice against heavily raced fillies as broodmares. She began her broodmare career as the property of Louise Viau, later passing to the ownership of Marshall Field III and then to Charles Shaffer's Coldstream Stud, which picked the mare up from the Lexington horse auction of November 1932 for US$750. Etoile Filante died in 1938, having been barren from 1936 on.
Pedigree notes
Etoile Filante is inbred 5x5x3 to 1875 Derby Stakes winner and three-time English champion sire Galopin and 5x5 to 1867 Derby Stakes winner and seven-time English champion sire Hermit. She is a full sister to 1932 American champion sire Chatterton, a multiple stakes winner.
Etoile Filante's dam Chit Chat is a full sister to Change, dam of juvenile stakes winner Yankee Princess (by Ballot). She is a half sister to Chinka (by Florizel II), dam of Canadian stakes winner Algonquin (by Galatine) and second dam of 1916 King's Plate winner Mandarin. She is also a half sister to Cerina (by Meddler), dam of the high-class Boniface (by Transvaal) and to Chilpiquin (by Florizel II), dam of multiple stakes winner Chepontuc (by Ornament).
Chit Chat was produced from the Galopin mare Chinkara, who was imported to the United States in 1902 by Clarence Mackay. Chinkara, in turn, is out of Raker (or The Raker), by the 1864 Ascot Gold Cup winner and important English broodmare sire Scottish Chief.
