A high-class miler on the dirt, Fairy Magic pulled off an upset in the 2007 Gran Premio Estrellas Classic (ARG-G1), Argentina’s equivalent to the Breeders’ Cup Classic (ARG-G1), which was contested on the turf that year over 2000 meters (about 10 furlongs) at San Isidro. Despite his own ability as a racehorse and a fine pedigree, he was a poor sire and was no better as a broodmare sire.
Race record
11 starts, 7 wins, 1 second, 1 third, 712,500 Argentine pesos
2007:
2008:
As an individual
A chestnut horse, Fairy Magic had a beautiful sweeping shoulder, strong hindquarters, and short cannons but was rather post-legged behind.
As a stallion
According to the Stud Book Argentino (https://www.studbook.org.ar/), Fairy Magic sired 31 winners (19.5%) and one stakes winner (0.6%) from 159 foals.
Connections
Fairy Magic was bred by Fernando Santamarina’s Haras La Quebrada. He raced in the colors of Caballeriza Las Hormigas and was trained by Alfredo Gaitan Dassie. He entered stud at Haras Orilla del Monte, where he stood through 2012. He then moved to Haras Costa de Rio, standing there in 2013 and 2014 before being pensioned. He died in November 2016.
Pedigree notes
Fairy Magic is inbred 5x5 to two-time American Horse of the Year Native Dancer and to the important sire Royal Charger. He is a half brother to Argentine listed stakes winner Magic Story (by Luhuk) and to Fairy Crown (by Louis Quatorze), dam of 2017 Premio Sibila (ARG-G2) winner Orange Nugget (by Freud). He is also a half brother to Fancy Legs (by Mutakddim), dam of 2020 Argentine champion 3-year-old filly Bellagamba (by Grand Reward).
Fairy Story, the dam of Fairy Magic, never raced. Sired by stakes winner Lookinforthebigone (by the Buckpasser horse State Dinner out of Gonfalon, by Francis S.), she is a half sister to Fare (by Fairidoon), dam of Group 1-placed Argentine Group 3 winner Casey (by Forlitano). Her dam Fairness (by Dancing Moss) is a full sister to 1986 Argentine Horse of the Year Fain, two-time Argentine champion Fatly, and Argentine stakes winner Flamigera. Fairness is also a half sister to Fasten (by World Cup), second dam of 2004 Grande Prêmio Juliano Martins (BRZ-G1) winner Marenostrum and third dam of Brazilian Group 2 winner Fugazi, and to Famed (by Faridoon), second dam of Chilean Group 2 winner Flash.
Fairness and her siblings are out of 1986 Argentine Broodmare of the Year Fallow’s Sister. Sired by 1953 Washington, D.C., International winner Worden II (a son of the noted stamina influence Wild Risk and a marked influence for stamina in his own right), Fallow’s Sister is a full sister to the great Argentine-based broodmare Fallow, the dam of eight stakes winners including two-time Argentine champion Farm (by Idle Hour), 1973 Brazilian champion older female Fizz (by Idle Hour), and 1979 Argentine champion stayer Farmer (by Dancing Moss). Also a half sister to Psall (by Psidium), second dam of Peruvian Group 2 winner Skulda and third dam of 2007 Peruvian champion miler Farrel, Fallow’s Sister is out of Galloway Queene, whose sire Colombo was the English champion 2-year-old male of 1933 and won the following year’s Two Thousand Guineas.
