Not a particularly memorable winner of the Kentucky Oaks, Flying Lill was a good 3-year-old but achieved no particular note after that season. Her broodmare career met with only modest success but was probably no more than could have been expected given her own relatively moderate pedigree and the caliber of stallions that she was mated to.
Race record
34 starts, 14 wins, 5 seconds, 4 thirds, US$20,280
1939:
As an individual
A brown mare; no further information available.
As a producer
Flying Lee produced seven named foals, of which five started and three won. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Flying Lill was bred by the Gorham Brothers. She was owned by Mrs. C. H. Cleary and was initially trained by Clifford Porter, later going to the barn of P. Reuter. She was ridden to her Kentucky Oaks win by Carroll Bierman. After producing five foals bred by C. H. Cleary, she passed to the ownership of W. H. Kurkjian's Solar Farm and then to that of Dr. William J. Lee Jr., who bred her final two foals. She disappears from the records after having been reported as “not covered the previous year” in 1955.
Pedigree notes
Flying Lill is outcrossed through five generations. A daughter of two-time Carter Handicap winner Flying Heels (by Flying Ebony), she is a full sister to multiple stakes winner Flying Wild, dam of 1948 Hollywood Oaks winner Flying Rythm (by Beau Pere). She is also a half sister to Arisbi (by Bull Dog), dam of 1952 Widener Handicap winner Spartan Valor (by Attention) and second dam of three stakes winners including 1956 Coronation Futurity winner Chopadette.
Laila Wild, the dam of Flying Lill, is a full sister to the good juvenile Burning Blaze and a half sister to Chance Tea (by Chance Sun), dam of stakes winner Tea Hostess (by Powdered Milk). Laila Wild is also a half sister to Saturday Off (by Kiev), second dam of 1967 Hollywood Derby winner Tumble Wind. The next dam in Flying Lill's tail-female line, the Tea Caddy mare Mexican Tea, is out of Mexilow (by Mexican) and thus is a half sister to Bonny Dear (by Bostonian), dam of stakes winner Flying Bonny (by Flying Heels).
Books and media
Flying Lill is profiled in Chapter 6 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).
