Mediocre at 2 and 3, Fort Larned began showing marked improvement late in his 3-year-old season. He continued to progress as a 4-year-old and ended up winning three Grade 1 events at ages 4 and 5, including the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic (USA-G1). Unfortunately, he has been a far worse sire than he was a racehorse.
Race record
25 starts, 10 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, US$4,471,322

Honors
Eclipse Award runner-up, American champion older male (2012)
Assessments
Rated at 125 pounds in the Intermediate category on the 2012 World Thoroughbred Rankings, 15 pounds below overall highweight and European Horse of the Year Frankel (whose 140-pound rating also topped the Intermediate category) but tied with American champion 3-year-old male I’ll Have Another as the best dirt performer.
Rated at 124 pounds in the Mile category on the 2013 Longines Best Racehorse Rankings, 6 pounds below overall highweight and Australian Horse of the Year Black Caviar and 1 pound below the top dirt performer, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Mucho Macho Man.
As an individual
A handsome, well-balanced bay horse, Fort Larned used a high cruising speed as his primary weapon and ran best when placed on or close to the lead. He was game and determined in a drive.
As a stallion
According to records maintained by The Jockey Club, Fort Larned has sired 98 winners (36.6%) and three stakes winners (1.1%) from 268 named foals of racing age as of January 8, 2024. His best runner to date is Grade 1-placed stakes winner Blonde Bomber.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Fort Larned was bred and owned by Janis R. Whitham. He was trained by Ian Wilkes and was ridden to his Breeders’ Cup Classic triumph by Brian Hernandez Jr. He entered stud in Kentucky in 2014 at Adena Springs. In late 2019, the stallion was sold to Daryl and Sally Duncan to stand at their Duncan Farms in Ohio.
Pedigree notes
Sired by multiple Grade 2 winner E Dubai (by Mr. Prospector), Fort Larned is inbred 4x5 to 1955 American Horse of the Year Nashua and 5x5 to the good racer and sire Fleet Nasrullah. He is a half brother to 2017 Matron Stakes (USA-G3) winner Walkabout (by Stroll), dam of multiple Grade 3 winner Walkathon (by Twirling Candy).
Fort Larned was produced from the winner Arlucea, whose Strawberry Road half sister Trinity Place is the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Affluent (by Affirmed; dam of listed stakes winner Magic Hour, by Awesome Again). The sisters are out of two-time American champion older female Bayakoa (by Consultant’s Bid), who produced only four foals.
Bayakoa's dam Arlucea (by Good Manners) is a Group 3-placed stakes winner and is a half sister to Michichola (by Aristophanes), dam of Chilean Group 2 winner Asaldua (by Our Talisman). In turn, the sisters are out of Izarra (by Right of Way). The female line traces back to Ante Diem, who became a major Argentine foundation mare after her importation from England in 1884.

Fun facts
- Fort Larned, Kansas, is a National Historic Site. It was established to protect traffic along the Santa Fe Trail from attacks by hostile Native Americans and was a working United States Army post from 1859 to 1878. It was named for Colonel Benjamin F. Larned, who was the Army’s paymaster general at the time that the fort was established.
- Fort Larned’s Breeders’ Cup Classic win gave jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. a one-of-a-kind birthday present, as the jockey was celebrating his 27th birthday on that day. Hernandez was aboard for both the horse’s other Grade 1 wins as well.
