Gandria first gained attention when she finished second in a 17-horse field after going off at 65-1 odds in the 1999 Queen’s Plate. In her next outing, she defeated Queen’s Plate winner Woodcarver in the Prince of Wales Stakes. While she did not win another stakes race in 1999, she was consistently in the money against the best of her division in Canada and also ran third in the Alabama Stakes (USA-G1) at Saratoga. Those were sufficient credentials to gain her a Sovereign Award as Canada’s best 3-year-old filly, and the following year she was a close runner-up in the Canadian older female division. She was a better racer than broodmare.

As an individual
A dark bay or brown mare, Gandria raced on furosemide following a fourth-place run in the 1999 Canadian Oaks, in which she bled. She retired from racing due to a suspensory issue.
As a producer
Gandria produced seven named foals, of which four started and two won. To date, none of her daughters have produced anything of significance.
Connections
Foaled in Ontario, Gandria was bred by D. G. McClelland. A CAN$60,000 yearling at the 1997 Canadian Breeders’ Sales select yearling sale, she was owned by Jurgen and Monique Schemmer’s Arosa Farms and was trained by Jim Cheadle. She was ridden to her win in the Prince of Wales Stakes (the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown) by Constant Montpellier.
Pedigree notes
Gandria is inbred 3x3 to the great international sire Northern Dancer and 5x5x5 to two-time English/Irish champion sire Nearco. She is a half sister to Inside Blitz (by Defensive Play), dam of the stakes-winning hurdler Isla Mujeres (by King of Kings).
Gandria is out of the winner Regent’s Paradise, whose dam Return to Paradise (by 1960 Wood Memorial Stakes winner Francis S.) is a full sister to Dottys Dream, dam of 1973 American champion stakes winner Athenian Idol (by Alcibiades II). Return to Paradise is also a half sister to Grade 3-placed stakes winner Bad Seed (by Stevward), dam of stakes winner and important California regional sire Pirate’s Bounty (by Hoist the Flag), second dam of 1995 Santa Monica Handicap (USA-G1) winner Key Phrase, and third dam of 2013 American champion 2-year-old male Shared Belief and Grade 3 winner Little Miss Holly.
Return to Paradise and her sisters are out of 1957 English champion 2-year-old filly Rich and Rare II. A daughter of Hyperion’s good sire son Rockefella out of Palmy Days (by Epigram), Rich and Rare II is a half sister to Smokey (by Saint Crespin III), dam of Italian Group 3 winner Lord Mark (by On Your Mark II).
