Gigli showed enough talent in his native Brazil to become a Classic winner at Rio de Janeiro’s Gávea track. Following transfer to the United States, he missed becoming a Grade 1 winner by a nose but by the end of his racing career was running for a US$25,000 claiming tag. As a staying turf horse with a foreign pedigree, he had no value as a stallion prospect and was gelded with the intent of retraining him as a lead pony. When he proved unsuitable for the job, he was slated to go to the Old Friends retirement center at Cabin Creek but is believed to have been taken home by his exercise rider instead.

He was owned by Robert “Bobby” Frankel and in Brazil was trained in Venãncio Nahid; after Gigli was imported to the United States, Frankel took over the training chores. He was ridden to his victory in the Cruzeiro do Sul by J. Ricardo, one of three jockeys tied for wins in the race with five each.
