A superior stayer compared to the American-bred colts of his crop, Go and Go won the Belmont Stakes (USA-G1) on merit but In doing so added new fuel to the debate over the use of the diuretic furosemide in American racing. New York did not permit race-day use of furosemide at that time, and the connections of Preakness Stakes (USA-G1) Summer Squall (a known bleeder) elected not to even try the Belmont because of this limitation. Kentucky Derby (USA-G1) winner Unbridled, a good second in the Preakness, started in the Belmont but ran a dull fourth; opinions differed as to whether the reversal of his form was caused by his not being able to use furosemide or because of the wear and tear of the Triple Crown series. Unbridled ran well during the rest of the year and clinched the 3-year-old championship by winning the Breeders' Cup Classic (USA-G1) at Belmont Park, a race in which Go and Go was pulled up and did not finish. Go and Go was stakes-placed at 4 before retiring to an undistinguished stud career.

As an individual
A chestnut horse, Go and Go had an unusually fluid stride. His body was powerful with flat withers; his hocks were out behind him. He handled both fast and off going on dirt and was also a stakes winner on turf in Ireland. According to trainer Dermot Weld, he was “tough, sound and genuine,” but the trainer candidly admitted that “we wouldn't consider him a superstar at home.”
As a stallion
According to records maintained by The Jockey Club, Go and Go sired 105 winners (48.4%) and five stakes winners (2.3%) from 217 named foals. His best runner was Grade 3 winner Hot Wells.
Connections
Foaled in Ireland at Moyglare Stud, Go and Go was bred and owned by Walter Haefner, owner of Moyglare. He was trained by Dermot Weld and was ridden to his Classic success by Michael Kinane. He entered stud in 1992 in New York at the New York Stallion Station (formerly Bennett Hill Farm); he later moved to Waldorf Farm in the same state. He fractured his pelvis in a paddock accident in 2000, necessitating euthanasia, and was buried at Waldorf.

Fun facts
- Go and Go may have owed his Belmont Stakes victory to the weather at Laurel Park in the fall of 1989, when the Laurel Futurity came off the turf due to rain. Go and Go won that race, a fact that was remembered by his connections when they were deciding his spring targets.
- Go and Go arrived in New York from Ireland just two days before the Belmont Stakes and did not actually see or work over the Belmont Park strip prior to the race.
- Go and Go was the eighth horse bred outside North America to win the Belmont Stakes and the first Irish-bred to do so since Cavan in 1958.
- Go and Go was honored at The Curragh by the running of the Go and Go Round Tower Stakes, which ran under that name in 1993-2013.
