Connections
Foaled at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky, Green Forest was bred by James G. Bell. A US$100,000 purchase from the 1980 Keeneland July yearling sale, he raced for Mahmoud Fustok. He was trained by Mitri Saliba and was regularly ridden by Alfred “Fredo” Gilbert. Following his racing career, he was syndicated at a valuation of US$14 million and entered stud in 1983 at his birthplace. In 1995, he was sent to India, where he was owned by Dashmesh Stud Farm. He died of chronic lung disease in 2000.
Pedigree notes
Green Forest is inbred 5x5 to 1929 American Horse of the Year Blue Larkspur and to 1943 American champion sire Bull Dog. He is a half brother to 1984 Prix Perth (FR-G3) winner Green Paradise (by Vigors) and to Grade 1-placed multiple stakes winner Honest and True (by Mr. Leader), dam of 1987 American champion 2-year-old filly Epitome (by Summing). Honest and True is also the second dam of multiple Grade/Group 2 winner Essence of Dubai and the third dam of Grade 2 winners Umpateedle, War Story, and Land Over Sea, as well as Grade 3 winners Jody Slew and Shared Property.
Green Forest and his siblings are out of Tell Meno Lies, a winning half sister to stakes winners Energy Boy (by Mr. Washington) and Emerald Landing (by First Landing). The last-named mare is the dam of Canadian stakes winners Paper Trail (by Bounding Basque) and Forest Green (by Shecky Greene).
Tell Meno Lies, in turn, is out of Filatonga, a Count of Honor mare who managed only one win from 54 starts. The next dam in Green Forest’s tail-female line, Blarney Castle (by Nasrullah) is an unplaced full sister to 1959 Sysonby Handicap winner The Irishman and a half sister to multiple stakes winner Knocklofty (by Parnassus) and 1975 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Shenanigans (by Native Dancer).
