Hakassan (CHI)

August 19, 2009 – Living

Sir Cat (USA) x Fusaichi’s Angel (USA), by Fusaichi Pegasus (USA)

Family 13-c

A member of the family of the great Seattle Slew, Hakassan was not his famous relative’s equal but was certainly more than ordinary. The winner of three Chilean Group 1 races by an average of over eight lengths, he swept Chile’s Triple Crown events for dirt males and was named the champion of his division. He was imported to the United States but did not start again before entering stud at Millennium Farm in Kentucky in 2016. In 2019, he was exported to the Philippines, leaving little trace behind from his American stay.

Race record

7 starts, 5 wins, 0 seconds, 1 third, US$283,771 (includes converted Chilean earnings)

2012:
  • Won Premio St. Leger (CHI-G1, 2200mD, Hipódromo Chile)
  • Won Premio Gran Criterium Mauricio Serrano Palma (CHI-G1, 1900mD, Hipódromo Chile)
  • Won Premio Dos Mil Guineas (CHI-G1, 1600mD, Hipódromo Chile)
  • Won Premio Victor Matetic Fernandez (CHI-G3, 1500mD, Hipódromo Chile)
  • 3rd Gran Premio Criadores (CHI-G1, 1600mD, Hipódromo Chile)

Honors

Chilean champion 3-year-old dirt male (2012/13)

Assessments

Rated at 115 pounds on the 2012 World Thoroughbred Rankings for his performance in the Premio St. Leger, 25 pounds below overall highweight Frankel (the European Horse of the Year) and 4 pounds below Going Somewhere, who topped all South American horses with 119 pounds for his win in the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (ARG-G1).

As an individual

A well-balanced dark bay or brown horse, Hakassan is less coarse than was Seattle Slew but is not light-honed. He is short-coupled with good rein length, a fine shoulder, a muscular body, strong hindquarters, and legs well set under him. He stands 16.1 hands.

As a stallion

Hakassan had very limited opportunities in the United States and did not sire any stakes winners before being exported to the Philippines.

Connections

Bred by Haras Jockey, Hakassan raced for Cahe Cabach Christian Alberto and was trained by Baeza Jarpa Juan Pablo. He was imported to the United States by Leo Liaskas of Green Hills Farm in 2013. He entered stud in 2016 in Kentucky at Millennium Farm. In 2019, he was exported to the Philippines to stand at Cool Summer Farm.

Pedigree

Sired by 1996 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (USA-G2) winner Sir Cat (by Storm Cat), Hakassan is inbred 4x4 to the breed-shaping sire Northern Dancer (the 1964 Canadian Horse of the Year and American champion 3-year-old male) and to two-time American Horse of the Year Secretariat. He is out of unraced Fusaichi’s Angel, whose dam Sand Pebbles (by Sadler’s Wells) is a full sister to 1992 Royal Lodge Stakes (ENG-G2) winner Desert Secret; to Group 1-placed Bineyah, second dam of Australian Group 3 winner Alzora and third dam of New Zealand Group 3 winners Mehzebeen and Wolfgang; and to Karasavina, dam of stakes winner Krasnaya (by Red Ransom) and second dam of 2018 Indian Derby (IND-L) winner Rochester. Sand Pebbles is also a half sister to Ellen’s Dancer (by Northern Dancer), second dam of Brazilian Group 2 winner Champion Star and third dam of 2010 Uruguayan Horse of the Year Relento, to Night Secret (by Nijinsky II), dam of hurdle stakes winner Dusk Duel (by Kris); and to En Cachette (by Diesis), second dam of multiple Chilean Group 2 winner En Guerra.

Sand Pebbles and her siblings are out of the stakes-placed Secretariat mare Clandestina, a half sister to 1978 American Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Seattle Slew (by Bold Reasoning). Clandestina is also a half sister to 1983 Two Thousand Guineas (ENG-G1) winner Lomond (by Northern Dancer), to multiple Irish Group 2 winner Seattle Dancer (by Nijinsky II), and to Irish stakes winner Argosy (by Affirmed). In addition, Clandestina is a half sister to Charming Tiara (by Alydar), third dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Caixa Electronica, and to Ghashtah (by Nijinsky II), second dam of English Group 2 winner Nasheej.

My Charmer, the dam of
Clandestina and her siblings, won the 1972 Fair Grounds Oaks. Her dam Fair Charmer (by Jet Action) produced nothing else of importance but is out of 1948 American champion 2-year-old filly Myrtle Charm (by Alsab), making her a half sister to 1954 Frizette Stakes winner Myrtle's Jet (by Jet Pilot). Myrtle Charm, in turn, is a half sister to Spinosa (by Count Fleet), second dam of French Group 3 winner Raise a Lady, and is out of Crepe Myrtle (by Equipoise), a daughter of 1936 American champion sprinter and handicap female Myrtlewood (by Blue Larkspur).
