Hangin Round (USA)

March 3, 1970 – c. 1988

Stage Door Johnny (USA) x Auburn’s Pride (GB), by Aureole (GB)

Family 14-b

On the track, Hangin Round was just another well-bred failure, unable to earn a single dollar during her short racing career. Her bloodlines came to the fore in the paddocks, where she produced four stakes winners and earned honors as Canada’s Broodmare of the Year in 1980. None of her sons achieved anything as stallions, but all three of her daughters had influence as broodmares.

Race record

5 starts, 0 wins, 0 seconds, 0 thirds, US$0

Honors

As an individual

A chestnut mare; no further information available.

As a producer

Hangin Round produced 10 named foals, of which nine started and seven were winners. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Mr. Macho (1977, by Ruritania; a gelding) won four Canadian stakes races, of which the most important was the 1981 King Edward Gold Cup Handicap.
  • Rainbow Connection (1978, by Halo) won Sovereign Awards at ages 2 and 3 as the best Canadian filly of her crop, and she added a third Sovereign Award as Canadian Broodmare of the Year in 1994. She is the dam of three-time Canadian champion Rainbows for Life (by Lyphard; a successful sire in Central Europe), 1990 CIGA Prix de l’Opera (FR-G2) winner Colour Chart (by Mr Prospector), and 1994 Cup and Saucer Stakes (CAN-R) winner Always a Rainbow (by Mr. Prospector). She is the second dam of 2001 American champion 2-year-old filly Tempera, multiple Grade 1 winner White Heart, and multiple French Group 3 winner Equerry and is the third dam of 2010 Saudi Arabian champion older female Caprivi.
  • Archdeacon (1980, by Dancing Champ) won the 1983 Prince of Wales Stakes (CAN-R), the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
  • Rainbow Two (1982, by Halo) never raced but is the second dam of multiple Grade 2 winner City to City.
  • Hangin on a Star (1984, by Vice Regent) won three stakes races including the 1987 Breeders’ Stakes, third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. She is the dam of 1993 Canadian champion 2-year-old male Comet Shine (by Fappiano) and of Misty Mission (by Miswaki), who took the third leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara, the Wonder Where Stakes (CAN-R), in 2000. Hangin on a Star is also the second dam of two-time Canadian champion Irish Mission and Grade 3 winners French Beret and Patience Game. In addition, Hangin on a Star is the third dam of Grade 2 winners Mission of Joy and Time to Dazzle.

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Hangin Round was bred by Mrs. Julian C. Rogers. As a broodmare, she was owned by Mrs. George T. Coker. Hangin Round disappears from the produce records after being reported as barren in 1987-8.

Pedigree notes

Hangin Round is inbred 4x4 to 1946 French champion sire Prince Rose, a first-rate racehorse whose wins included the 1932 Prix du Président de la République (now the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud). She is a half sister to the minor stakes winner New Pride (by Julmar), dam of stakes winner Baldski’s Pride (by Baldski). Hangin Round is also a half sister to All Puffed Up (by Dynastic), dam of the minor stakes winner Dyna Surge (by Plastic Surgeon).

Hangin Round and her siblings are out of Auburn’s Pride, a daughter of 1954 English champion older male Aureole (by Hyperion) and 1957 Sandown Park Stud Produce Stakes winner Patroness (by 1946 Prix du Jockey Club/French Derby winner and 1960 French champion sire Prince Chevalier). Patroness is a half sister to 1956 Queen Mary Stakes winner Pharsalia (by Panorama), dam of 1963 Princess Margaret Stakes winner High Powered (by Hugh Lupus) and 1970 Chesterfield Cup winner Hearken (by Hethersett) and second dam of Italian Group 3 winner Coltinger; to 1957 Nunthorpe Stakes winner Gratitude (by Golden Cloud); to 1961 Cesarewitch Stakes winner Avon’s Pride (by Arctic Prince); to 1968 Greenham Stakes winner Heathen (by Hethersett; a two-time champion sire in Uruguay); and to 1970 Prix Vermeille winner Highest Hopes (by Heathersett), dam of 1995 Made in Europe Val Des Pres Trophy (GER-G2) winner Hushang (by Shernazar) and second dam of 2004 American champion steeplechaser Hirapour. In addition, Patroness is a half sister to Pampas Flower (by Pampered King II), dam of 1980 Ladbroke Nell Gwyn Stakes (ENG-G3) winner Evita (by Reform).

Patroness and her siblings were produced from stakes-placed Verdura (by Court Martial), whose half sister Bazura (by Blue Peter) is the dam of 1959 Hollywood Derby winner Bagdad (by Double Jay) and stakes winner Bazaar (by Double Jay). Verdura, in turn, is out of Bura (by 1935 English Triple Crown winner Bahram) and is a half sister to Bouillabasse (by Blenheim II), dam of 1953 Eclipse Stakes winner Argur (by Djebel), 1946 Prix Quincey winner Cuadrilla (by Tourbillon), and French stakes winner Pensacola (by Marsyas).
