Hawk Wing (USA)

March 15, 1999 – Living

Woodman (USA) x La Lorgnette (CAN), by Val de l’Orne (FR)

Family 9-g

One of the most outstanding horses sired by Woodman, Hawk Wing won three Group 1 races and was adjudged to have turned in the most outstanding racing performance of 2003 in winning that year’s Lockinge Stakes (ENG-G1) by 11 lengths over an excellent field. Unfortunately, Hawk Wing was unable to translate his racing brilliance to his stud career; after standing In Ireland in 2004-2008 with disappointing results, he was exported to Korea, where he was no more successful.

Race record

12 starts, 5 wins, 5 seconds, 0 thirds, US$1,162,376 (including converted English and Irish earnings)

2001:
  • Won King of Kings EBF Futurity Stakes (IRE-G2, 7FT, The Curragh)
  • Won Aga Khan Studs National Stakes (IRE-G1, 7FT, The Curragh; new course record 1:20.90)

  • 2nd Irish Champion Stakes(IRE-G1, 10FT, Phoenix)
  • 2nd Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (ENG-G1, 8FT, Ascot)

2003:
  • Won Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes (ENG-G1, 8FT, Newbury)

Assessments

Earned a rating of 122 pounds on the 2001 International Classifications for 2-year-olds, second only to European and American champion juvenile male Johannesburg.

Earned a Timeform rating of 136 pounds at 4.

Highweighted at 133 pounds on the 2003 International Classifications for his Lockinge Stakes performance.

Highweighted over 9.5-11 furlongs among 3-year-old males in England and Ireland in 2002.

Highweighted among older males over 7-9.5 furlongs in England and Ireland in 2003.

As an individual

A bay horse, Hawk Wing was an excellent mover with a smooth, graceful stride but was criticized by some observers as lacking the will to finish strongly. He injured a knee in the 2003 Queen Anne Stakes (ENG-G1), ending his racing career.

As a stallion

As of April 28, 2025, The Jockey Club credits Hawk Wing with 343 winners (36.1%) and 15 stakes winners (1.6%) from 949 named foals. According to the Korean Stud Book’s website (https://studbook.kra.co.kr/neweng/main.jsp), he has not covered any mares since 2019.

Sire rankings

Per Arion Pedigrees (https://www.arion.co.nz/Home.aspx):
  • 5th on the Irish general sire list in 2008 and 2009.

Notable progeny

Cambina (IRE), Lethal Weapon (IRE), Stand to Gain (IRE)

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Hawk Wing was bred by Hill 'n' Dale Farm. A US$225,000 weaning at the 1999 Keeneland November mixed sale, he was sold to Coolmore associate Susan Magnier through the 2000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August yearling sale for US$300,000. He was trained by Aidan O'Brien. He entered stud in 2004 at Coolmore Ireland, County Tipperary. In 2009, he was sent to KRA Jeju Stud Farm, South Korea. He was apparently pensioned after the 2019 season, when he covered only one mare.

Pedigree notes

Hawk Wing is outcrossed through five generations. He is a half brother to 2006 EBF Fillies Stakes (IRE-G3) winner Race for the Stars (by Fusaichi Pegasus), dam of Irish listed stakes winner Sir John Lavery (by Galileo). He is also a half brother to restricted stakes winner Alexandrina (by Conquistador Cielo), dam of 1999 Canadian Horse of the Year Thornfield (by Sky Classic). In addition, Hawk Wing is a half brother to Halo My Darlin (by Halo), third dam of Grade 3 winner Halo Dolly.

Fun facts
  • Timeform’s rating of Hawk Wing’s race in the 2003 Lockinge Stakes suggested that his effort was the best turned in at the mile distance by any horse in the world for nearly 10 years. His performance was the more remarkable in that he had no pacemaker and made all the running from start to finish, not a common occurrence in European racing.
