A good race mare in her own right, Ignite belongs to an elite group of broodmares in American history as she was the dam of two winners of races later included as part of the American Triple Crown.. Neither of her Classic-winning sons had any impact as sires, and her family has long since passed from prominence as a source of stakes horses.

Luminous, the dam of Ignite, won the 1885 Select Stakes at Monmouth. She is a full sister to Luxury, dam of 1892 Iroquois Stakes winner Brown Beauty (by Reform or Darnacardoch), in turn the dam of 1897 United States Hotel Stakes winner Braw Lad (by Eolus); Luxury is also the third dam of 1915 Canadian Handicap winner Slipper Day. Returning to Luminous, she is also a full or half sister to 1884 Travers Stakes winner Rataplan (by Alarm or Reform) and a half sister to Miss Lumley (by Reform), winner of the 1882 Hunter Handicap. In addition, she is a half sister to Shansheen (by Pardee), dam of Canadian stakes winner Duke of Roanoke (by Hamburg), and to Lady Scarborough (by Leamington), second dam of 1904 Kentucky Derby winner Elwood and 1895 Tennessee Derby winner Fandango.
Luminous and her siblings are out of the imported English mare Lady Lumley, by the excellent English stayer Rataplan (full brother to seven-time English dual Classic winner and champion sire Stockwell). The next dam in Ignite’s tail-female line, Schottische, is by 1855 Ascot Gold Cup winner Fandango out of an unnamed 1851 mare by 1840 Liverpool Summer Cup winner Sleight-of-Hand.
