I’m Glad (ARG)

August 27, 1978 – c. 2000

Liloy (FR) x Glad (ARG), by Idle Hour (GB)

Family No. 7
After rising to the top of Argentine racing in 1981, I’m Glad became one of a number of high-class South American runners purchased and brought to the United States by Nelson Bunker Hunt during his career in the Thoroughbred industry, perhaps influenced by “Bull” Hancock and his advocacy of the “international outcross” while developing Claiborne Farm into the greatest American stallion station of the 20th century. Unfortunately, I’m Glad never lived up to the hopes placed on him and ended his days in obscurity.

A dark bay or brown horse; no further information available.

As a stallion

According to statistics compiled by The Jockey Club, I’m Glad sired 101 winners (47.4%) and seven stakes winners (3.3%) from 213 named foals of racing age. His most notable runner was Black Glad, a multiple Group 2 winner in Peru.

Connections

I’m Glad was bred by Haras Santa Maria de Araras. Following his triumph in the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini, he was purchased by Nelson Bunker Hunt and sent to the United States, where he stood at Prestonwood Farm in Kentucky. In 1993, he moved to Panoramic Farms in Utah and next moved to Gonzales Ranch in New Mexico for 1996. In 1999-2000, he was listed as standing at Shamdoc Farms in New Mexico. His last foals were registered in 2001.

Pedigree notes

I’m Glad is inbred 5x5 to two-time English/Irish champion sire Nearco, an unbeaten champion on the racecourse. He is a full brother to 1984 Argentine Mare of the Year So Glad, dam of 1993 Super Derby (USA-G1) winner Wallenda (by Gulch). He is also a half brother to 1975 Grande Prêmio Duque de Caxias (BRZ-G2) winner Gas Mask (by Decorum), dam of 1986 Grande Prêmio Marciano de Aguiar Moreira (BRZ-G1) winner Quip Mask (by Waldmeister), 1988 Grande Prêmio Diana (Brazilian Oaks, BRZ-G1) winner Slew in Mask (by Waldmeister), 1985 Grande Prêmio Salgado Filho (BRZ-G2) winner On the Top (by Millenium), and multiple Brazilian Group 3 winner Never Be Bad (by Earldom) and second dam of 2006 Uruguayan champion older male Necessaire. I’m Glad and his siblings were produced from Glad, who was voted the Pellegrini Award as Argentina’s Broodmare of the Year in 1981 and 1984. Sired by the stakes-winning Persian Gulf horse Idle Hour, Glad is one of seven important broodmares produced from 1960 Premio Maipú winner Good Star (by 1949 Middle Park Stakes winner Masked Light).
