Inglorious (CAN)

May 10, 2008 – Living

Hennessy (USA) x Noble Strike (CAN), by Smart Strike (CAN)

Family 7-a

Picture
Inglorious (a word referring to an action or situation causing shame or dishonor) was probably the most ironic name bestowed on a Thoroughbred since No Class. Unbeaten during a brief juvenile campaign, Inglorious returned at three to win the Woodbine Oaks against her own sex and the Queen’s Plate against males, sealing a Sovereign Award as Canada’s best 3-year-old filly. She added several graded stakes placings to her record at ages 4 and 5 before retiring from the track. She has yet to produce anything approaching her own ability.

Race record

16 starts, 5 wins, 2 seconds, 4 thirds, US$1,421,222 (included converted Canadian earnings)

2010:
  • Won Ontario Lassie Stakes (CAN-R, 8.5FD, Woodbine)
  • Won Fanfreluche Stakes (CAN-R, 6FA, Woodbine)

2011:
  • Won Queen's Plate (CAN-R, 10FA, Woodbine)
  • Won Woodbine Oaks Presented by Budweiser (CAN-R, 9FA, Woodbine)
  • Won La Lorgnette Stakes (CAN-L, Woodbine)
  • 2nd Rachel Alexandra Stakes (USA-G3, 8.5FD, Fair Grounds)
  • 3rd Selene Stakes (CAN-G3, 8.5FA, Woodbine)

2012:
  • 3rd Dance Smartly Stakes (CAN-G2, 9FA, Woodbine)
  • 3rd Bayakoa Handicap (USA-G2, 8.5FA, Hollywood)

2013:
  • 3rd Suwannee River Stakes (USA-G3, 9FT, Gulfstream Park)

Honors

Sovereign Award, Canadian champion 3-year-old filly (2011)

As an individual

A bay mare, Inglorious was a good mover at both slow and fast gaits and had a quiet disposition. She liked to make a big run in the stretch.

As a producer

As of April 17, 2025, Inglorious has produced three named foals. The best of them thus far has been Miss Canada (by Exceed and Excel), who was Group 2-placed in Australia.

Connections

Foaled in Ontario, Inglorious was bred by Jurgen and Monique Schemmer’s Arosa Farms. She was sold for CAN$90,000 through the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Canadian-bred September sale and was owned by Donver Stable (Donna and Vern Dublinsky). She was trained by Josie Carroll and was ridden to her Classic scores by Luis Contreras. She was sold to Australia's Kia-Ora Stud for US$1.35 million at the 2013 Keeneland November sale.

Pedigree notes

Inglorious is inbred 4x5 to the breed-shaping sire Northern Dancer, Canadian Horse of the Year and American champion 3-year-old male in 1964. She is also inbred 5x5 to eight-time American champion sire Bold Ruler, the 1957 American Horse of the Year. Inglorious is a half sister to Grade 3 winner Dixie Strike (by Dixie Union), whose record includes a win in the 2012 Prince of Wales Stakes (CAN-R), the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Dixie Strike is the dam of Grade 3-placed listed stakes winner Forever Dixie (by Quality Road).

Noble Strike, the dam of Inglorious, won the restricted Belle Geste Stakes as a 4-year-old in 2002. She is a half sister to Dolce Lemone (by Lemon Drop Kid), dam of listed stakes winner Dolce Lili (by Scat Daddy), and is out of multiple stakes winner Green Noble (by Green Dancer), whose half sister Abigailthewife (by Affirmed) won the 1994 La Prevoyante Stakes (USA-G2) and is the dam of 2002 Tropical Turf Handicap (USA-G3) winner Krieger (by Lord At War). Green Noble is also a half sister to Grade 2-placed multiple listed stakes winner Skybound (by Sky Classic).

Green Noble was produced from multiple stakes winner Hattab Voladora (by 1970 Brooklyn Handicap winner Dewan, by Bold Ruler). A half sister to Austrian stakes winner Ridge Heights (by Riva Ridge); to Lopokova (by Nijinsky II), dam of South African listed stakes winner Lake Baikhal (by Jallad); and to Bless the Bride (by Blushing Groom), dam of Blizz Bless (by Lode; a multiple champion in Singapore and Malaysia) and Uruguayan listed stakes winner Blameitonrio (by Fitzcarraldo), Hattab Voladora is out of Wonderful Gal, a winning full sister to the good stakes winner and sire Al Hattab.

Fun facts
  • Inglorious is the fifth filly to win both the Woodbine Oaks and the Queen’s Plate, following Flaming Page (1962), La Lorgnette (1985), Dance Smartly (1991), and Dancethruthedawn (2001). Since her Classic double, she has been followed by Lexie Lou (2014), Holy Helena (2017), and Moira (2022).
  • Inglorious was known as “Brandy” as a foal, playing off her sire’s name.
