Seeking the Gold (USA) x Better Than Honour (USA), by Deputy Minister (CAN)
Family 8-f
A beautifully bred colt, Jazil managed to deliver on his regal pedigree just once by winning the 2006 Belmont Stakes (USA-G1) from a field lacking both the Kentucky Derby (USA-G1) and Preakness Stakes (USA-G1) winners. Hampered by injury for the remainder of his career and overshadowed by his brilliant half sister, Rags to Riches, Jazil went to stud with relatively modest expectations. Even by that standard, he proved disappointing before his death in 2014.
Race record
11 starts, 2 wins, 5 seconds, 3 thirds, US$890,532
2006:
Assessments
Jazil earned a rating of 119 pounds for his Belmont Stakes performance on the 2006 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings, 10 pounds below overall highweight Invasor and 9 pounds below the top 3-year old male on dirt, Bernardini.
As an individual
A leggy, short-coupled bay with a straight, strong hind leg, Jazil stood 15.3 hands. He was a confirmed stretch runner. He suffered bruising at the end of a hind cannon bone coming out of the Belmont Stakes and never quite recovered from the injury.
As a stallion
According to statistics compiled by The Jockey Club, Jazil sired 83 winners (59.7%) and eight stakes winners (5.8%) from 139 named foals, including 2014 Venezuelan Horse of the Year Comediante, 2014 Indian champion older male Machiavellianism and 2016 Puerto Rican champion imported 2-year-old filly Mia Karina. His best runners in any of the major racing countries were Grade 3 winners Farhaan and Hawaakom in North America and Group 3 winner Sefri in Dubai.
Notable progeny
Comediante (VEN), Machiavellianism (IND), Mia Karina (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Jazil was bred by Skara Glen Stables. He raced for Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, who purchased the colt for US$725,000 from the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale. He was trained by Kiaran McLaughlin. Jazil entered stud in Kentucky in 2008 at Shadwell Farm. He was leased to Venezuela's Haras La Orlyana for the 2014 Northern Hemisphere breeding season. He returned to Shadwell at the conclusion of his lease and died there as the result of a paddock accident in October 2014.
