The 2002 Coaching Club American Oaks (USA-G1) had one of the weakest fields of any of the Grade 1 events for 3-year-old fillies that year, and Jilbab won a slow race mostly on superior stamina—though to her credit, she did overcome a severe stumble out of the gate that cost her some 10 to 15 lengths in the early going. Easily beaten by eventual divisional champion Farda Amiga when the two crossed paths in the Alabama Stakes (USA-G1), Jilbab ended her racing career with the Oaks as her only stakes triumph, She did not enjoy a long broodmare career as she died of colic at age 8.
Race record
9 starts, 3 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, US$347,880
2002:
As an individual
A strongly-made dark bay or brown mare, Jilbab bore a distinct resemblance to her sire. She was devoid of early speed but could deliver a long sustained run.
As a producer
Jilbab produced three named foals, of which one started and placed three times from four starts. Neither of her daughters has produced anything of significance.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Jilbab was bred and owned by Darley Stud. Initially trained for Eoin Harty for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Godolphin Racing, she made her first two starts at 3 out of the barn of Kiaran McLauglin, racing in the name of Sheikh Mohammed’s brother Maktoum al Maktoum. After she won an allowance race by 13 ¼ lengths on June 16, 2002, she was moved to the barn of Sheikh Mohammed’s first-string trainer Saeed bin Suroor and ran in the Coaching Club American Oaks carrying the Godolphin colors. She was ridden to her Oaks victory by Mike Luzzi. She died of colic in June 2007.
