A full sister to multiple European champion Dancing Brave, Jolypha was a high-class racer in her own right and became a Classic winner in France. Like Dancing Brave, she did not fare as well as hoped when taken to the United States for the Breeders’ Cup, though her third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (USA-G1) behind American Horse of the Year A.P. Indy and American champion older male Pleasant Tap was quite commendable. She failed to produce anything approaching her own merit during her breeding career.

Rated at 117 pounds on the Daily Racing Form’s Free Handicap for American female turf runners of 1993, 10 pounds below champion Flawlessly.
As an individual
A tall, attractive dark bay or brown mare who was considered a “real looker” according to Juddmonte Farms manager Gerald O’Rourke, Jolypha did not race as a 2-year-old. She was determined in a drive and had a good turn of foot.
As a producer
Jolypha produced 11 named foals, of which six started and four won. Her only foal of significance was the winning Woodman mare Arum Lily, dam of 2010 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (CAN-G1) winner Redwood (by High Chaparral) and second dam of Australian Group 3 winner Realm of Flowers.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Jolypha was bred and owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms. She was trained by André Fabre at 3 and by Bobby Frankel at 4. She was ridden to her triumph in the Prix de Diane by Pat Eddery. She died in March 2005 after rupturing her large intestine during foaling.

Fun facts
- Jolypha’s third-place finish in the 1992 Breeders’ Cup Classic was the best to date in the race by a 3-year-old filly. Among female racehorses of all ages, only Zenyatta has bettered her performance, winning the 2009 edition and finishing second in 2010.
