After gaining a reputation as a hard-luck loser of several important events during her first few seasons, Judy the Beauty finally put it all together as a 5-year-old. She won four graded stakes that season and sealed a championship by staving off the closing run of Better Lucky in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (USA-G1). She did not win another stakes race at 6 but added three graded stakes placings to her résumé. As of 2023, she has yet to see her first winner as a broodmare.

Assessments
Rated at 115 pounds in the Sprint division over both dirt and synthetic surfaces on the 2014 Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings, 15 pounds below overall highweight Just a Way (the Japanese champion older male of 2014) and 8 pounds below the top-rated sprinters, Lankan Rupee (the 2013/2014 Australian Horse of the Year) and Terravista (an Australian Group 1 winner).
As an individual
A good-sized, well-balanced chestnut mare, with a deep shoulder and girth; a long, sloping pelvis; and short cannons, Judy the Beauty typically stalked the pace during her best races. She shipped well and was a winner over dirt, turf, and synthetics. Inclined to be fractious and nervous as a youngster, she became calmer and more professional as she matured. She did not care for having her races too close together and performed better when they were spaced out.
As a producer
As of August 2023, Judy the Beauty has produced three named foals; all are unraced.
Connections
Foaled in Ontario, Judy the Beauty was bred by Adena Springs. She was owned and trained by Wesley Ward, who bought her for US$20,000 from the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale as a smallish, chunky yearling. She was ridden to her triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint by Mike Smith.
Pedigree notes
Judy the Beauty is inbred 5x5 to 1959 American champion sprinter Intentionally and to the top turf horse The Axe II. She is a half sister to Holy Rose (by Touch Gold), dam of stakes winner Itsallabouttheride (by Harbor the Gold).
Judy the Beauty was produced from 2001 Wishing Well Stakes (USA-L) winner Holy Blitz, whose half sister Red Valentine (by Dehere) is the dam of restricted stakes winners Glib (by Great Notion) and Spotted Heart (by Lion Hearted). The sisters are out of 1994 Old Hat Stakes (USA-L) winner Pagofire (by multiple Grade 1 winner Island Whirl), a full sister to 2000 Round Table Stakes (USA-G3) winner Fan the Flame and to Island Fire, dam of listed stakes winner Rikman (by Storm Creek). Pagofire is also a half sister to 1995 Bed o’ Roses Handicap (USA-G2) winner Incinerate (by Groovy), dam of 2005 Gazelle Stakes (USA-G1) winner In the Gold (by Golden Missile) and listed stakes winner High Blitz (by Lucky Lionel), second dam of 2017 Shakertown Stakes (USA-G2) winner Holding Gold, and third dam of South African Group 2 winner Val d’Orcia.
Pagofire, in turn, is out of minor stakes winner Horsafire (by 1972 Flamingo Stakes winner Hold Your Peace, by Speak John). Produced from four-time stakes winner She Can’t Miss (by 1971 Vosburgh Handicap winner Duck Dance), Horsafire is a half sister to stakes-placed Isleo Bebe (by Island Whirl), dam of stakes winner River Echo (by Swiss Yodeler). The female line traces back to 1938 Selima Stakes winner Big Hurry, a daughter of the great broodmare La Troienne and an important matriarch in her own right.

Fun facts
- Judy the Beauty received 261 of 265 possible votes in Eclipse Award voting for champion female sprinter in 2014. The other four candidates for the honor received one vote each.
- In February 2022, Judy the Beauty’s trophy for the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint was among the items taken during a break-in at Wesley Ward’s home. A number of the other stolen trophies (golden boxes commemorating wins at Royal Ascot) were recovered in damaged condition when a suspect was arrested in March 2022, but Judy the Beauty’s trophy remained missing.
