La Bambuca (ARG)

September 8, 1976 – August 26, 1995

Gamín (ARG) x Good Star (ARG), by Masked Light (IRE)

Family No. 7
La Bambuca was the product of an experiment in close inbreeding, as both her sire and her dam were produced from the Argentine foundation mare Bambuca. La Bambuca was not a success as a racer, but as a broodmare she proved excellent. She produced two Group 1 winners, a Spanish champion, and a multiple Group producer, and three of her granddaughters have been breeding on.

She is the dam of multiple Group 2 winner Bamba Fitz (by Fitzcarraldo), the dam of 2008 Gran Premio Estrellas Juvenile Fillies (ARG-G1) winner Miss Bamba (by Numerous) and 2012 Gran Premio Saturnino J. Unzué (ARG-G1) winner Bamba Jane (by Johannesburg), the second dam of 2022 Gran Premio San Isidro (ARG-G1) winner Bamb Craft and multiple Group 2 winner Bamb Harlan, and the third dam of 2024 Argentine champion 2-year-old male Colifato Novo. Go Bambuca is also the dam of 2005 Premio Ayacucho (ARG-G3) winner West Bambú (by West by West).
  • El Bimbo (1987, by Babas Fables) was the Spanish champion imported older male and champion imported miler. He was of no importance as a sire.

She is the dam of Gran Premio Eliseo Ramírez (ARG-G1) winner La Belga (by Roy); the second dam of 2011 Argentine Mare of the Year Balada Sale, 2015 Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos (Argentine Two Thousand Guineas, ARG-G1) winner Le Blues, and Argentine Group 2 winner Liriope; and the third dam of Argentine Group 2 winners Laima and Marcus Aurelius and Japanese Group 2 winner Satono Flag. Her more distant descendants include 2025 Japanese champion 2-year-old male and Japanese Group 3 winner Kalamatianos.
  • Leyden (1991, by Political Ambition) won the 1994 Gran Premio Carrera de la Estrellas Juvenile Sprint (ARG-G1). He was unable to reproduce that form after being exported to the United States and was gelded.

Sired by the stakes-winning Tatán horse Gamín, La Bambuca is inbred 2x2 to Bambuca, who won the 1950 Premio Enrique Acebal and the 1951 Premio Gilberto Lerena (both races that later held Group 1 status). She is one of seven important broodmares produced from 1960 Premio Maipú winner Good Star (by 1949 Middle Park Stakes winner Masked Light), a high-class sprinter who also won the 1959 Premio Venezuela. Among La Bambuca’s half sisters are 1964 Premio Enrique Acebal and Premio Eliseo Ramírez winner Venturanza (by Seductor), 1967 Premio Saturnino J. Unzue winner La Feona (by Luxemburgo, stakes winners Daystar II (by Seductor) and Good Luck (by Luxemburgo), and two-time Argentine Broodmare of the Year Glad (by Idle Hour), dam of 1981 Argentine Horse of the Year I’m Glad (by Liloy) and 1984 Argentine Mare of the Year So Glad (by Liloy).

Produced from Bambuca, Good Star is a half sister to Gamin and to Miss Venecia (by Luxemburgo), dam of 1985 Gran Premio General San Martín (ARG-G1) winner Mister Marco (by Go Forth), 1985 Premio Abril (ARG-G2) winner Miss Bimba (by Our Talisman), and Argentine stakes winners Mair (by Mantecon) and Mi Estandarte (by Decorum); second dam of Argentine Group 3 winner and 2000 Argentine Broodmare of the Year Miss Peggy; and third dam of 2000 Argentine Mare of the Year Miss Linda, 2003 Argentine champion miler Mr. Nancho, 2019 Gran Premio de Honor (ARG-G1) Wild Stream, and Argentine Group 2 winner Miss Mary.

Sired by 1930 Eclipse Stakes and Champion Stakes winner Rustom Pasha from the stakes-winning Congreve mare Bimba, Bambuca is a full sister to Begum II, dam of 1953 Frizette Stakes winner Indian Legend (by Ardan). She is also a half sister to Bunting (by Seductor), third dam of Argentine Group 2 winner Unruly and Brazilian Group 3 winner Lord Bob.
