Still regarded as one of the greatest race mares ever foaled in Argentina, La Mission swept Argentina’s Quadruple Crown series in 1940, the only filly to have done so. Unfortunately, none of her progeny achieved any distinction either as racehorses or as breeding stock.

Argentine champion 3-year-old filly (1940/1941)
As an individual
An elegant, leggy, feminine chestnut mare, La Mission had a good shoulder, a deep girth, a short back with a strong loin coupling, and a sloping croup. She was somewhat upright in her pasterns.
As a broodmare
La Mission produced at least four foals, none of any great note.
Connections
La Mission was bred by Haras Ojo de Agua and raced in the colors of Caballeriza La Cascada. She was trained by Nicolas Berazategui. As a broodmare, she was owned by Haras de La Pomme. Her last registered foal was born in 1950.
Pedigree notes
La Mission’s pedigree is outcrossed within five generations. She is a full sister to Premio Vicente L. Casares winner Haut Brion, first past the post in the 1935 Polla de Potrillos (Argentine Two Thousand Guineas) but disqualified. La Mission is also a full sister to Fond de Cave, third dam of 1986 Grande Prêmio Cruizero do Sul (Brazilian Derby, BRZ-G1) winner Grimaldi.
La Mission was produced from Iquem (by 1921 Gran Premio Nacional winner Pulgarin), a half sister to 1916 Gran Premio Nacional winner Saint Emilion (by Cyllene) and to the good Argentine stakes winner Barsac (by Kendal), a two-time champion sire in Chile. Iquem is also a half sister to Bourgogne (by Your Majesty), dam of the unbeaten Argentine champion Macon (by Sandal), 1931 Gran Premio Selección winner Cote d’Or, and Uruguayan stakes winner Romanee (by Cyllene); second dam of 1941 Argentine Horse of the Year Bon Vin; and third dam of 1957 Gran Premio Polla de Potrancas (Uruguayan One Thousand Guineas) winner Cote Royal and of Aurreko, winner of the 1953 Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos (Uruguayan Two Thousand Guineas) and 1954 Gran Premio José P. Ramirez (Uruguay’s top race for horses aged 3 and up).
Iquem and her siblings are out of the Gay Hermit mare Albilla, whose stakes-winning full brother Charcott is believed to have been the first horse to have won races on three different continents (Africa, Europe, and South America). Albilla is also a full sister to Nelesena, whose son Naranjal won the Gran Premio Jockey Club and several other good races in Uruguay, and to Celso, the Chilean champion sire of 1915. Nesta, the dam of Albilla and her siblings, was imported from England as a yearling in 1889. She is by 1875 Derby Stakes winner and three-time English champion sire Galopin out of Crediton, by the Rosicrucian horse Chevron.
