Lady Capulet won only once, but that one win was in the 1977 Irish One Thousand Guineas (IRE-I), placing her in a small club of horses that have broken their maidens in a Classic. Her subsequent record was more akin to Brokers Tip than Sir Barton, however, although in fairness to her, she raced only at the highest level in her brief career. She did well as a broodmare but endures in pedigrees primarily through her son El Prado, the American champion sire of 2002.
Race record
3 starts, 1 win, 1 second, 1 third, US$64,400 (converted from Irish earnings)
1977:
Assessments
Earned a Timeform rating of 116 pounds.
As an individual
A good-sized gray mare (she was officially registered as a roan but was genetically a gray), Lady Capulet was lengthy, good-bodied and attractive. While she clearly had talent, her resoluteness and appetite for racing were open to question; however, she reportedly suffered from a blood disorder that may have limited her ability to deliver on her potential.
As a producer
Lady Capulet produced 13 named foals, of which 10 started and four won. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Lady Capulet was bred by Claiborne Farm and was sold to Robert Sangster for US$70,000 at the 1975 Keeneland July yearling sale. She produced her first foal, Donna Sabina, as the property of Mitchell McLeish. By the time her second foal, All Ashore, was foaled, Lady Capulet had passed to the ownership of Ballydoyle Stud. Her next foal, Sheristadar, was bred by the partnership of Lyonstown Stud and Swettenham Stud, and was followed by Entitled, bred by The Entitled Syndicate. All of Lady Capulet's remaining foals were bred by Lyonstown Stud, either alone or in partnership. She was last reported as “not covered” in 1997.
Pedigree notes
Lady Capulet is inbred 4x3 to Mahmoud, 4x4 to Pharamond II and 5x5 to Alcibiades. A full sister to multiple Irish Group II winner Sir Wimborne and a half sister to the good sire Drone (by Sir Ivor's sire Sir Gaylord), she is out of Cap and Bells, whose other foals include Turban (by Bagdad), dam of multiple English Group III winner Turkish Treasure (by Sir Ivor). Turkish Treasure, in turn, produced English Group III winner Magic Mirror (by Nureyev) and Group III-placed stakes winners Sun Worship (by Nonoalco) and Treasure Trove (by Try My Best) and is the second dam of eight stakes winners including 2006 Turkish Horse of the Year Ribella, multiple Turkish champion Deha, 2006 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (USA-IA) winner Asi Siempre, English Group II winner Almushtarak and Brazilian Group II winner Tangara.
Returning to Cap and Bells, she is also the dam of Mobcap (by Tom Rolfe), whose produce includes Grade II winner Notebook (by Well Decorated; a useful sire) and multiple Italian stakes winner Sasimoto (by Saratoga Six). Cap and Bells herself is a stakes-placed full sister to 1959 American Derby winner Dunce and a half sister to multiple stakes winner Ace Destroyer (by Grand Admiral) and juvenile stakes winner Ghan Fleet (by Count Fleet). She is out of Ghazni, a daughter of Mahmoud out of the Sun Briar mare Sun Miss.
