Swaps (USA) x Simona (USA), by Princequillo (IRE)
American Family 11
Sired by one of the all-time greats and out of a full sister to an English champion, Lady Vi-E. turned out to have more pedigree than performance. Other than an upset win in the Kentucky Oaks, the daughter of Swaps had little to recommend her as a racehorse, though part of this may have been due to a temperamental quirk. She had only a brief producing career.
Race record
28 starts, 3 wins, 3 seconds, 3 thirds, US$55,631
1970:
Assessments
Rated at 118 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old fillies of 1970, 6 pounds below official divisional co-champion Office Queen and 5 pounds below the other official co-champion, Fanfreluche.
As an individual
A bay mare, Lady Vi-E. was a stretch runner who had the bad habit of trying to pull herself up as soon as she made the lead.
As a producer
Lady Vi-E. produced only two foals; both were by Sir Gaylord, and both started and won. The better of the two was her 1973 filly, Lady B. Gay, who was a minor stakes winner at 3 and placed in seven other black-type races.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Lady Vi-E. was bred by Catesby Clay. She was purchased for US$30,000 from the 1968 Keeneland July yearling sale and raced for the father-and-son team of A. H. and A.. M. Stall. She was trained by John Oxley and was ridden to her Kentucky Oaks win by Dave Whited.
Pedigree notes
Lady Vi-E. is inbred 5x3 to four-time American champion sire Sir Gallahad III and 5x5 to the notable stamina influence Dark Ronald, a five-time champion sire in Germany. She is a half sister to multiple English stakes winner Principal II (by Primate).
Simona, the dam of Lady Vi-E., is a full sister to 1950 English champion male Prince Simon and is out of Dancing Dora (by Sir Gallahad III), whose full sister Lady Wisdom is the second dam of two stakes winners plus 1957 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Belle Jeep. Produced from Minerva (by Ambassador IV), Dancing Dora is also a half sister to 1932 American co-champion 3-year-old male Faireno (by Chatterton); to 1938 Louisiana Derby winner Wise Fox (by Gallant Fox); and to 1939 Delaware Oaks winner Wise Lady (by Gallant Fox), second dam of 1964 Canadian Oaks winner Later Mel and the good juvenile Melson. In addition, Dancing Dora is a half sister to Lady Minerva (by Gallant Fox), dam of the minor stakes winner Four Sisters (by Four Freedoms).
Books and media
Lady Vi-E. is profiled in Chapter 10 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).
