Closely inbred to Northern Dancer’s sire Nearctic, Langfuhr may have been the best speedster bred in Canada since Nearctic himself. A late-maturing horse, he won three Grade 1 races at a mile and under on the tough New York circuit at ages 4 and 5. A reliable sire of winners, he had a rather uneven stud career but got some high-class runners, among them 2007 American champion older male Lawyer Ron and 2003 Canadian Triple Crown winner Wando, that year’s Canadian Horse of the Year.

As an individual
A handsome, masculine, well-muscled dark bay horse, Langfuhr usually did his best running from off the pace. He was retired due to a slight tendon strain in his left foreleg found after his victory in the 1997 Metropolitan Handicap. He was an intelligent horse with a kindly disposition. He was fond of carrots.
As a stallion
According to records compiled by The Jockey Club, Langfuhr sired 1183 winners (64.3%) and 75 stakes winners (4.1%) from 1839 named foals of racing age. Fun facts
- Langfuhr was named for a borough in the Polish city of Danzig (Gdańsk).
- Langfuhr ran five times in Canada during his championship year, winning two optional claimers, but both his stakes wins were in New York. He raced only once in Canada in 1997 and so was ineligible for a Sovereign Award that year as he did not make the requisite three starts in the country.
- Langfuhr was part of a remarkable foal crop for Gus Schickedanz, who also bred 1995 Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1) and Canadian Oaks (CAN-R) winner Gal in a Ruckus and 1995 Monmouth Oaks (USA-G2) winner Kathie’s Colleen (dam of Wando) that same year.
- Langfuhr remained in Schickeldanz’s ownership throughout his life despite multiple offers for sale to Japan or syndication.
